[She likely won't mention it again either.

Not because there is anything particularly bad about sharing your first kiss - if it can really be considered a proper first kiss - with a sort of friendperson so much as she knows him and she knows herself and this is not the sort of thing either would really feel the need to talk about.

She'll be there five minutes early.]

[Considering it's probably going to be an Only Kiss? One has to also it a First.

Five minutes early means she'll get there in the last pangs of fidgeting. Carefully staring at the exact angle of each utensil. She'll have to actually tap him on the shoulder to get him out of the trance of crouching next to the kitchen table--in a tuxedo, of course--in intent examination.]

[She'd envy that attention to detail if she didn't suspect it was the symptom of something larger and more unpleasant.

Clearing her throat now. Because even she knows better than to sneak up on him while he's in butler-mode.]

[A finger lifts briefly in her direction. He can't interrupt his ritual. The universe will come crashing down if he can't get it exactly where he wants it to be.

And he can stop at any time. Like any non-addict can.

The careful push at the end of the fork doesn't make a difference visible to the human eye, but it earns a satisfied nod before he unfolds to his full height to glance over imperiously. And sees that it's her. And can't keep his brow from arching up.]

...you're early.

[It's such a pity that punctuality, like so many things, appears to have fallen out of fashion.

Or maybe it's the influx of Outsiders that's to blame.]

I am.

Would you like some help?

You're aware I'm more than capable, I assume.

[Look how aligned things are. To the last micrometre. True, it's probably the symptoms of a sickness, but that doesn't make it less impressive, does it?]

You can sit.

More than capable, yes. [And, yes, she's well-aware of how perfectly aligned things are. It's impressive and perhaps just the tiniest bit daunting.

Or it would be, if she were the sort of person to allow such things to bother her.]

Still, it's the polite thing to do.

[His head cants just a hair off-center.]

You've more than fulfilled your quota of polite things to do for the day.

[After all, she's here. Because the polite way to respond to being asked out is to agree.

He'll just hold out her chair for her.]

I wasn't aware that there was a quota.

[Taking the seat he is generously offering.

Pausing to smooth out the folds of her dress - jeans would have been inappropriate, after all.]

[There's the faintest quirk of approval as she fixes her skirt. This is why he likes you, Tegan. This, and the fact that you're a girl he knows or whatever.

She's tucked in just as exactly to the table as the flatware is exactly aligned.]

That's very big-hearted of you, Miss Tegan. [He hesitates a moment, fingers lingering on the back of her chair.] Tegan.

Civility costs us nothing.

[Well, that and there are things that are expected from them. He understands. Inasmuch as one can understand, at least.]

A pity, though, that not everyone appreciates it.

I suppose it's one way of learning who one's friends truly are.

[There's something abortive about not adding 'Miss' to the end of his statement. But... it's Tegan and it's a Date and he can distract himself with serving her the game hen he's prepared for dinner.

This isn't weird, right?]

Assuming they're not better at hiding their intentions.

[She might have been born into Clubs, but there was enough of the Diamond in her that she knew better than to trust most people at face value.

Which just made this all the more unusual.]

Have things been all right, Declán?

[No, is the answer. No They Have Not Been. Because Utter Devotion isn't enough to convince people that being a Three doesn't disqualify him from assuming the position of head butler. Normalcy and Personable Affect are also required. Doing Normal Things.

Like, hopefully, perching across from a childhood 'friend' across the kitchen table in a tux looking faintly put out.]

What wouldn't be?

You just look [waves vaguely in his direction.

On the surface he looks just like he always does but there is something different. Something unsettling.

She looks down, frowns.]

Perhaps I was mistaken.
