and its a 6! need_some_rope December 31 2011, 06:55:57 UTC
While it wasn't the most usual thing for Murphy to be gone out without Connor for so long and him not to know where he was, it wasn't so unusual that it was a reason to worry either. They weren't both still tied to their Ma's apron strings, after all.

Worrying, he was though. That uncomfortable kind of unease where you just know that you're being silly and irrational, but you can't help wonder; what if you're right?

Opening another can of beer, he tried to distract himself, channel hopping on the tv, all the time focused on the door and the telephone.

Connor doesn't wait to see if Murphy can do it on his own: He clearly can't and the hell does Connor give a flying fuck about Murphy's sense of independence or honor right now. Hands around his torso, he helps his brother out, quickly ducking to get back under his arm before he has a chance to fall.

Holding the hand resting limply over his shoulder, he steers the other man through the entrance.

"Now, I know the stairs are better, but the fuck am I carryin' you up them today. Jus' pray the lift don't break down on us, kay?"

As much as the uncalled help had bothered him before, the cat was out of the bag now and Murphy had had a taste of true rest at the cab. He had the chance to truly relax and simply trust his brother to take care of everything.

As proud as he might be, he needed more of that, so, without further complaints her simply clinged to his brother and did his best to walk himself into the building.

"It's workin'." He had heard someone use it a couple of nights ago. "We'll be fine." He dragged his words a bit. Even his voice gave away how tired Murphy was.

He nodded and steered their way to the elevator. He caught a glimpse of their reflection in the grimy mirror at the back of the small box. He'd only seen his twin in a panicked close up blur; from a distance he could see his flushed skin and ruffled hair, the dark patches of sweat on his clothes... some dried vomit in his hair?

Gritting his teeth, Connor turned to pressed the button for their floor and then settled them both back against the cool reflective surface.

"... How you doin'?"

Murphy was panting, his chest rising with each slow intake of breath as he leaned against his brother. He felt cold as ice, even though Connor's cool skin was a relief when it touched his.

"I'm okay." He replied automatically.

The lift was taking forever though and all Murphy wanted was to sit down, as the small room spinned around him. But he wasn't going to. It would take less than a minute to reach their floor. He wasn't going to take a seat when in a blink of the eye they would find themself on their apartment.

He could do this.

"Okay." Connor nodded. For a moment, he placed the back of his hand against his brother's forehead. "Yer burnin' up, Murph..."

The lift dinged and as the doors opened Connor pulled his twin back against him, to walk him the last short stretch to their apartment. He was wondering if he should call a doctor, but they didn't have insurance and he couldn't afford to call someone out to them. There was no way Murphy to travel to a free clinic, it'd exhaust him.

"The good news is I don't need ta use the thermometer ta test yer temperature, little brother."

That actually stole a weak grin out of Murphy, a huff of a chuckle. "Go fuck yerself."

Seeing their apartment was so close by gave him a little strenght. He was planting his feet firmly on the floor, even pulling on Connor a bit like an excited dog pulling on its master's leash.

Soon they had crossed the door, and, still pulling on his brother, he managed to fall on his knees the second his feet touched his bed.
