[The cold was starting to dull the pain and as Mary sits down, John lets his head lay so he can look in her direction. He squints, trying to recall] ...I remember the taxi...it's a bit fuzzy after that.
[There we go, his double vision finally resolves into one Mary Morstan. And he can finally give her an apologetic look] Sorry. This wasn't how I pictured this date going.
[He gives her hand a squeeze] No, no, don't say that. You could have been killed and... [Wow, he almost didn't want to think about that] ...I'm glad you weren't hurt. Don't worry about me, I've got a thick skull.
[Mary, still holding the ice pack, lightly brushes some hair away from his forehead. She has to laugh softly.]
You've been hit by a car, and you're worried that you've ruined the date! Oh, John, I'm just happy you're alive! [She pushes her chair closer to him, resting her elbow on his pillow.] Perhaps a night in next time.
[John manages a smile as her hand smooths his hair back, amazed that she was talking about next time.] A night in would be nice... [The smile fades as he realizes with another groan] ...Sherlock.
[A night in was out of the question. Not with human heads in the fridge, scientific equipment everywhere, bombs being set off across the street, and who knows what kind of drugs he's got stashed somewhere in the flat.] I don't think we'll be truly safe anywhere.
You don't know the half. [He might be induced to share more stories later. Now, he wasn't feeling quite up to it.]
I do like dogs. [rueful smile] You're not so bad either. [his headache is subsiding a bit]
[Of course, the hardest part was still to come, the doctor comes in and says they'll have to observe him overnight to make sure he doesn't fall asleep and go into a coma unknowingly. Watson isn't thrilled with the idea, but he knows they're right.]
[Mary sighs once the doctor has left the room. At least she has a bit of time before she is required to leave and trudge on home. And she is glad because if she tried to stand now, surely her knees would give in again. She is still shaken, but tries to keep the mood light.]
As far as first dates go, this is surely the most exciting one I've had.
[She does still look pale and shaken, now that John can see her face. He looks worried] Are you sure you're ok? Maybe you should sit for awhile. I know hospital coffee is awful, but you could probably use a cup. [He's the patient and he can't help being a doctor] What if you let that ER doctor check you over just to be sure?
I'm really, really sorry. [Watching her date get plowed over by a taxi, he can't imagine how shocking that would be. He gives her hand a tug to try and get her to sit on the bed with him so he can give her a hug. She looks like she needs one.]
[If they can smile and laugh about this after the fact, that was a good sign. He smiles down at her and gives her another squeeze hug]
Ohhhh....if anything it's a good story to tell our kids someday. [He didn't entirely mean it like that, not implying that they would be married to each other and it almost surprises him that he said it aloud. Maybe that knock on the head knocked a screw loose.]
[He finds himself chuckling as well] 'Is that why daddy has a big dent in his head now?'
[John pinches the bridge of his nose with the last laugh out.] Wow...this is going to be quite the headache later. [He knows the worst injuries in a concussion are what can happen later. Headache was the least of his worries but sitting here with Mary, he actually wasn't too worried about it.]

My place, if that's not too forward. I hope it isn't. My only roommate is my dog, and she tends to like most people.

No, I just - I just want to sit here. I'm fine, honestly, I think I just need to collect myself before I even think about leaving.

You shouldn't apologize for something out of your hands, John. [she says, voice muffled.]

Well then...I'm sorry I apologized. [He says above her hair, trying to lighten the mood]

[A playful tone of exasperation, lifting her head to smile at him, eyes on his. She lets out a small laugh, her cheeks rosier now.]

'Children, let me tell you the story of how I fell for your father in a hospital room...' [She laughs with a little twinkle in her eye.]
