This is what happens when you get a new cell phone contract with free calls to other people on the same network, and you're bored, and you're Connor MacManus. He taps a pen against the table as he waits for Ruby to pick up.

So what that he only knows her in passing acquaintance? That just makes it more fun.

The tone - whichever song Ruby has picked at the beginning of the week- is loud and piercing to her hungover sleeping mind and she gropes blindly for the offending device, glancing briefly at the clock without taking in the numbers before mashing it against her face and all but groaning into the mouthpiece.

"Wha'?"

"Heeey! Rubes!" He flicks the pen across the table, aiming to hit he back of the chair opposite, which it does, and sits back in the chair.

"How are yeh? Yeh sound a bit quiet..."

"Why are you yelling?" Her face is still smooshed into the pillow, muffling her almost whispered words. She has to work even harder to figure out whose on the other end of the line, but it's the accent that gives it away -she only knows two Irish men after all, and even hungover she knows that accent.

"I can't tell if this is Connor or Murph." She snorts a laugh. "I'm good man. Big night, lotta booze."

Connor laughs at the tell-tale signs of a woman that's had a good night partying and is now nursing the punishment for having fun.

"I dunno if I should be offended that yeh can't tell the difference between us! This is Connor here."

He paused a minute for effect, propping his feet up on the table. "Listen. I gotta tell yeh something, Rubes..."

Ruby groans, pulling the phone away from her ear as the laugh pierces through her brain. "You're not allowed to be offended. S'not fair expecting me to know shit when I'm not conscious." But she's smiling, though he can't see that.

At those words, she drags herself into a sitting position, another groan as her stomach rolls violently. "Is it the type of thing where I should have caffeine first?"
