Rose thought about staying where they were a bit longer, thought about asking him if he had any spare fruit in his pockets for an impromptu picnic, but the viewing deck was getting more crowded by the moment. Instead, she nodded, imagining being up there once the sun had set -- with actual food they could pick up from vendors. A proper fair meal. "Yeah, I s'pose you're right. We've got a lot of ground to cover an' only so many hours of daylight left!"
She rested a hand on his hip and pressed close to his back as they descended the stairs. Because it was easier to maneuver the crowds on the stairs in a single-file. Not at all because of the aforementioned pressing close and the way her body just sort of naturally fit against his. Completely involuntary and unconscious.
The slight squeeze she gave his hip was less so and she rose on her toes when they paused to let some people pass, resting her chin on his shoulder. "I love this. I really do. Dunno if I've mentioned that lately, but I do and we are definitely gonna have to come back
( ... )
Oh! That hand was unexpected, and he blinked in surprise. Then there was a squeeze and he couldn't help to quirk his lips in a smirk and briefly glanced over his shoulder but then smiled as people walked past them on the stairs.
"I think we can make that happen! Can't let down your mum." He knew the first thing she'd do when they got back to the TARDIS was call her and spend at least the next hour blabbing. Not that was a bad thing, just he knew they were close and knew her mum must be lonely without her.
Once down back on the regular ground, he stuffed his hands in his pocket as they walked among the crowd and into the first shop they saw. It looked to be jewelry mixed with odd trinkets. He glanced around, commented how a couple items made him recall a story from another planet he had visited, and then stepped outside to wait for her.
She chuckled at his ready agreement, the bright smile she gave him offering her thanks. He was so different, this Doctor. The domestics didn't seem to bother him as much as they'd done before. Half the time, Rose thought he secretly enjoyed them. Not being slapped or warned to keep her safe, lest he face the wrath of Jackie Tyler, just...that well, it was a family. Christmas crackers and worry and well-meaning nagging that drove you mental half the time all came as part of the package.
The Doctor wandered off -- of course he did, but if you heard him tell it, she was the one with that particular habit -- and Rose took advantage of the time to really look at the items for sale. He'd given her a few notes to cover her purchases before he'd left, thankfully, but she didn't want to spend it all in one place. The trinkets and decorative pieces were brilliant, but she couldn't see her mother getting much use out of any of them
( ... )
The Doctor wasn't far from the tent, he could be found deep in conversation with a man in a top hat, presumably another vendor, as he rambled on about trains. Most specifically, the dual gauge connection completion in Normandy. He caught the man glancing at something or someone behind him and he turned to see Rose approaching him.
"Find anything?" She must have given that smile on her face.
He excused himself from the man, to slowly walk with Rose as she showed her finding. The Doctor couldn't help it, he was eager to show her more, to continue on their little adventure. It was fun, exploring and being able to enjoy his time, and the look of excitement and wonder displayed on Rose's face didn't hurt either. This was exactly why he enjoyed traveling with humans - so curious and excited!
Rose's smile broadened when she spotted the Doctor and she nodded, linking her arm through his and holding up her purchase with the other arm. "It was this or some kind of porcelain egg thing. Thought Mum'd get more use out of these." Occasionally, Rose tried to bring back things that were slightly more on the ordinary side of things. While they were on Earth, anyway.
And while she was thinking about it. Which she wasn't, most of the time. There was too much to see and do and experience. There was also a whole lot of running for their lives, and that tended to get in the way of thinking about home and souvenir shopping.
Exactly why she was going to take full advantage of the moment. "Can we go look at some of the artists' stuff? Think we could get one of 'em to draw us or paint us or something?"
He quirked his eyebrows in half amusement, then laughed, "Sure!" That would be interesting, the last time he had been painted was a long, long time ago. And really, it was just a big communication error.
Away they went, stopping by to grab some snacks and finally the Doctor was in mid-bite of his apple when Rose called him over to a specific tent. Inside was some fancy rugs and couch laid out for them, where the artist sat in a chair talking to another woman.
Leaning into Rose, "These drawings better not suck us into them like last time..." Y'know, the Olympics? Creepy children's drawings? They were SO going back to the TARDIS if that happened again.
She leaned into the Doctor automatically, shivering involuntarily and she nudging the his side with an elbow lightly when his words registered. Rose remembered the Olympics and him getting sucked into a drawing all too well, thanks. Repeating that was not allowed and she'd...do something if the Universe tried to pull that one again. What, she didn't know, but she would.
"Don't say that, don't even think that. 'S as bad as saying 'I'll be right back' in one of them horror films. Or 'nothing could go wrong.' These drawings are gonna be brilliant and we'll pin 'em up on the fridge back home," she asserted. "Reckon the TARDIS'll like having 'em there."
Hearing the artist saying his goodbyes to the other woman in the tent, Rose smiled at the man when he waved her and the Doctor over to him. "Don't s'pose you can do a quick scan for alien tech, just in case?" Congratulations, Doctor. You've made her paranoid. Making sure to stand in front of him, she starts toward the elaborate rugs and couch, certain he'd be right behind her.
"Oh? Pin them up on the fridge? Now you've convinced me." He was both serious and teasing her, really it was her choice to choose which one was correct.
He nudged her forward after her comment about scanning for alien technology as they both settled down on the seats provided. The Doctor had to admit, this was slightly embarrassing, but that's mostly because sitting still for a long period of time was unheard of for him. After figuring out the logistics of things, it ended up not being so bad, and many stories and experiences were swapped between the three of them as the artist worked and painted. Afterwards, he was kind enough to hold the painting for them to pick up later as they continued on their way.
It was nearing mid afternoon when the Doctor finally turned to Rose, "So I think it's time for the surprise, yeah?" He had been anxiously awaiting this moment the entire time, other than seeing the Eiffel Tower with her, but this? This was extra special, something that was unique to this festival and era.
He was frequently both serious and teasing her, so Rose took it as such. The fridge thing was her joking (mostly, although the level of domestic there amused her to no end and was in part to blame for her choosing that particular option), so she assumed that was teasing. As for convincing him, that was a given. Usually. There were few things Rose couldn't convince the Doctor to do if she really had her heart set on it and she knew it.
Case in point? He actually sat mostly still for the extended period of time it took to have the portrait made. She teased him about it a bit in whispers during pauses in conversation with the painter, bumping his shoulder with hers and there was even a kiss to his cheek at one point. She did appreciate it, after all. By the time they were done, even Rose was having trouble remaining seated in the same spot. Her bum was starting to get sore

All smiles and teeth as he gripped her hand and nearly took off running to their next destination. There was a sharply dressed man with a megaphone enticing the crowd in. "Come see it! Step right in! Moving pictures, right here, everyone!"
The Doctor had no shame pushing his way through the crowd, although securing his hold on Rose's hand as they went past to stand towards the middle of the audience. Leaning down, he explained, "I love a good film, don't you?" His eyes widened with excitement, as if he had never seen a flm before. But not just any film! The debut of moving pictures with sound! How brilliant was that
( ... )
Rose laughed. She couldn't help it. His excitement was endearing and amusing and, based on his reaction, one would probably think he hadn't ever seen a film before. As many times as he'd made her sit through 'The Muppet Movie,' she could speak to the inaccuracy of that assumption. "I would never have guessed that about you," she teased

LOLFOREVER! The Muppet Movie!?captoftardisMay 8 2012, 05:11:57 UTC
He was so absorbed in the audience's emotions, that he almost startled by Rose's jab to his side. Glancing down, he listened to her quip and smiled a bit sheepishly, "If I showed you those, I'd have to kill you." He could barely dance, that was something his last regeneration was far better at than him. And singing? That's even worse, although he seemed to have no shame belting out some Beatles tunes while repairing the TARDIS.
"You enjoying yourself?" He asked as the projection flipped off and the reel spun a few times in its place, indicating the film was over. She appeared to be happy, which only made him smile wider.
LOL! The Doctor's love of the Muppet Movie is canon - who am I to argue?summinkothewolfMay 9 2012, 01:57:55 UTC
Oh, she could get used to putting that smile on his face. Cocky was a good look on him, sure (a fact which she would never ever admit to, of course), but sheepish was utterly adorable. "I dunno...might be worth it, to see them. I'll show you mine if you show me yours?" It was a challenge and an offer and that was definitely her flirtatious tone
( ... )
I totally didn't remember that! captoftardisMay 9 2012, 12:17:03 UTC
"It's turning out to be a lovely day." He didn't want to admit exactly how much fun he was having because he'd be talking a kilometer a minute and there'd be alot of arm flailing. Also words couldn't exactly describe properly what he felt spending this time with Rose, as he was definitely cherishing it.
"C'mon, I had at least one other thing to show ya!" They managed to push themselves out of the crowd and walked down quite a distance to a strangely shaped long building. "The world's largest telescope! 1.25 meters in diameter, 60 meters long! It actually can't be upright, so they use mirrors to reflect space-type subjects, although it's purpose wasn't for that." He drew himself closer to Rose, lowering his voice, "In about 9 years, the company that built it will go bankrupt and the telescope will be dismantled."
My love of Tooth & Claw knows no bounds, which might explain why I remembered that, hahaha!summinkothewolfMay 9 2012, 21:54:27 UTC
"Blimey," she breathed, gaze riveted on the humongous telescope.
Rose leaned her head in automatically when the Doctor drew closer and furrowed her brows at both the addition and his initial information sharing. "What -- I mean, it's sad that they'll go belly-up an' all," she whispered back, not wanting to let that cat out of the bag any more than him, "but what's the point of a telescope that can't be upright?"
That didn't come out quite as she meant it to, so she tried again. "You said they use mirrors to reflect space-type things, but that seems like a lot of extra work when they could've just built one that works properly...what was its purpose supposed to be?"
