River Song | Doctor Who | Open to all! songofsong August 15 2011, 15:14:14 UTC

When he showed her the psychic paper, River couldn't help but chuckle. His unofficial invitation to every event in the universe - good and bad.

"Then I'd better get ready," she agreed, sweeping past him to take the dress from its hanger. "I'll see you on the dancefloor, sweetie."

He wandered around outside in the hallway, exploring the very large house. There were quite a few decorative tables with grand flower arrangements scattered about. Downstairs, he could hear voices and laughter amidst some music playing - big band or swing music if he were judging correctly.

Happiness, really. This was why he loved parties so dearly. Everyone seemed so relaxed and enjoying themselves.

And then the doors swung open revealing an eagerly glowing River Song. "My, you do clean up rather nicely."

The atmosphere of the party was infectious and when River arrived, she swept into the room with a smile on her face and a glint in her eye. The dress that had been hung in her room looked far better on her, demonstrating a style that the Doctor had never seen on her before. The first time he met her, she was covered, at some points, entirely, by an unflattering spacesuit. Now she could wear what she wanted and she made it her duty to look her best.

Slowing by the Doctor, she smiled to his compliment. "You mean you prefer me in my clothes?" she asked with a tuneful little laugh, then drifting on by and making her way across the hall. She stepped between people and was almost lost from sight, save for the instantly recognisable hair.

The Doctor mingled about, bouncing from group to group, gathering names and introductions as he went. Yes, I'm the Doctor. No, no other name.

He had lost track of River after her clever quip, but managed to spot her in the corner visiting with a small group of women. A waiter walked by and he swiped 2 glasses of champagne and made his way over to her, handing her a glass when he arrived.

When the Doctor approached her, River slowly turned to face him, smiling when he handed her a glass of champagne. "Thank you," she said, taking a sip from the bubbly contents before she turned to look around the grand room. "How are you finding this meeting of minds? Supposedly all of the best intellectuals in the universe are here tonight. Interesting, don't you think?" she said, taking another drink and raising her eyebrows conspirationally.

"Oh yes! Very facinating! I was just talking to someone about some mathematical theory. They didn't quite believe me that Pythagoras was quite drunk when he created the Pythagorean theorem and that was only after when I tried to introduce pizza rather too early in time."

There were a few eyebrows raised at his comment and he quickly took a gulp of the champagne to shut himself up. "Oh yes, quite good!"

River struggled to hide a smile as he rambled, rather just sipping at her champagne and observing him with interest. She realised people were looking at him and so she turned her head in direction of the dancefloor. "Oh, I do love this song," she said, quickly sweeping him away from the curious guests and off towards the flurry of spinning dresses and twirling tuxedos.

He was stumbling behind her and found a passing waiter to drop off the empty glass that was in his hand. "Are you wanting to dance?" He asked it as if it was the most incredulous idea at this time.

It was a foreign tune, not exactly one he recognized, but with a nice tempo given all the people swaying to it. "I don't think I'm a good dancer..." He was all arms and legs and had only danced a few times. His past self on the other hand, was quite good.

River quickly turned to face him, her eyes fixing on his. She raised her hands, depositing her empty glass on a tray without even looking and promptly took hold of one of his hands. She stepped in closer, chest to chest, her other hand lightly settling upon his shoulder. There was a devilish smile and a gleam in her eye.

"Spoilers."

"Spoilers!?" He stammered as he placed his other hand on the small of her back. "In what situation am I made to dance?" He asked as if were never something he'd come up with on his own free will.

She was clearly leading him at this point until he finally figured the steps out and began to take the lead from her. "Oh, this is nice!" There was minimal casualty with their fellow dancers as they continued to sway about. And for the first time since losing his companions and feeling like he had let Donna down, he felt at ease.

River simply chuckled to herself, remaining ever elusive and didn't answer his question. She took the lead for the moment, moving with sweeping but graceful steps, giving him the time to find her pace. When he began to follow her pattern, she relaxed into his lead, a smile upon her face. It was one of the few moments in which they moved in true harmony, in the same direction, at the same time.

The music continued for a few minutes later before fading out into another. Neither partner pulled away and continued for another song. The Doctor was unsure how River was feeling, but he was enjoying her company.

When the song ended, he excused himself to grab another drink for them both and walked outside to catch a breath of fresh air and to check on the TARDIS, which was parked on the outskirts of the property. "Why are you here, Professor Song?" Why did they happen to meet? His always over active mind couldn't help to wonder if their meeting was entirely coincidental.

When they finally parted, River gave him a gentle smile, her arms returning to her side. She accompanied the Doctor to the door and outside, breathing in the nightime air and feeling content. She slowly walked across the grounds, the trail of her dress hem scattering glowing pollen from the faintly blue grass.

When he questioned her, her smile widened. "For the same reasons as you, Doctor."

She didn't continue, instead changing topics when she saw the TARDIS slightly hidden by the bushes. "Oh!" she gasped pleasantly, brushing past him and going to the TARDIS door. She smiled contently, placing her hand against the door and feeling the hum of the sentience through her fingertips. "I haven't seen you for a while."

He quirked his lips in a half frown at her answer. He was doing what he did best: run and running away from his problems currently felt better than facing them. Time will come eventually when he had to deal with them.

River had run over to the TARDIS and if he didn't know any better, she was cooing at it with her hand to the door.

"Do you want to go inside?"

At the Doctor's words, River half-glanced over her should, sorely tempted by the offer. She hadn't seen the old girl in so long, nor had she been inside. "I think I will," she then said softly, closing her hands around the cool metal handle. She carefully pushed the door open, stepping inside and hearing her heels ring on the grated metal flooring. Making her way up the ramp, she gazed around the TARDIS interior, fascinated to see it had a different theme.

Moving closer to the main deck, she slowly ran her hand across the beams, feeling the stone-like texture graze the pads of her fingers. She felt a loving warmth caress her as she walked through the TARDIS, a presence she could truly appreciate thanks to the Time Lord DNA in her make-up. If she wasn't mistaken, the TARDIS had missed her too.
