A costume party!? The Doctor hadn't been to one in ages (literally!) and wasn't going to let more time slip by. Besides, he had been traveling alone for a little bit that a costume party sounded exactly what he needed.
So donning a black suit and a mask he set out. Initially he started by snatching a few snacks before getting lost in conversation which then somehow led him to the dance floor randomly switching partners on occasion. This next partner was a petite woman and felt strangely familiar to him, "So what brings you here?" The music started up as the cue to start. So much for alot of conversation!
Jo was used to having conversations over loud music, so it didn't perturb her. "Fun," she said, as they started dancing. "I came with a couple of friends I haven't seen for ages. And I love dressing up." Which was why she was wearing a long purple dress that she had to hold up so she didn't tread on it, and matching shoes and mask. The mask had beads on, which tinkled every time she moved her head. Which was actually starting to annoy her, but she wasn't about to say that.
He had to think about that answer for a moment, as it seemed now the more and more places he went, there was bound to be someone or someone related to someone he knew. The universe worked in mysterious ways. "No, although... Well, this will sound silly given we only just met, but you remind me of an old friend I once knew."
It wasn't like he could request her to take off her mask. Despite that being rude, it kind of spoiled the fun of the "mysterious stranger" feel to the whole party.
He didn't look like anyone she knew, so she was sure they hadn't met before. "At least it's a friend I remind you, not an enemy." She smiled as she danced.
"Most certainly! I can't afford to have any more 'enemies', but as they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer!" Although he could never imagine dancing with a Dalek.
"More enemies?" First impressions probably weren't the easiest way to tell, especially when his face was hidden behind a mask, but she couldn't imagine this man having any enemies, never mind so many he couldn't afford to have any more. "What happened that you have so many enemies?" she asked softly.
"Oh, a lot of miscommunication. Sometimes work related, often times not. Erm, it's complicated." If he wasn't wearing a mask, he'd be rubbing at his eye as a nervous habit of his.
"I'm a bit of a scientist, consultant..." Traveler? Expert? Just really curious?
"Scientists often have enemies, don't they?" She didn't know a lot about the subject, but she had picked up some things at least. They got upset if other people discovered or invented things before they could. "I'm sure they'll understand. You just need to give them time."
"We shouldn't, but we seem to, don't we?" He laughed for a moment before correcting himself, "Not that you'd know, probably." There was a final spin just before the song ended. Still handing her hand, he bowed.
"Can I treat you to a cup of punch? It's rumored to be quite tasty!"
"I'd love to. All that dancing's made me thirsty." She let go of his hand to take his arm as they manoeuvred through the other dancers to the punch. "What sort of science do you work on?"
"I'm a bit partial to physics, but really everything. I know a little something about everything." Not that he was bragging, because he wasn't, just that it was true.
"Do you know many scientists, miss? You seem quite knowledgeable on the matter! Or are we all that bad." But if you're having fun working on a project, did it really matter.
She grinned. "Only the one, really. But I've always liked science." As long as the past few years counted as always.
There were people around the punch, but none of them were queuing, just drinking and chatting. So Jo slipped in and got them a cup each. "The punch is good," she said, after a sip. "I don't know what's in it, but it's generally best not to know, as long as it tastes nice."
She was impressed that he could work out everything in the punch just by tasting it. She had another sip herself and he was probably right but couldn't be as sure as he was.
"I'm not really," she admitted. "But I'm learning all sorts. I'm the assistant to a scientists and he's teaching me."
He absentmindedly rubbed at his nose, "You really remind me of an old friend of mine. Erm, I know we're suppose to be quiet an' all, but, do you mind if I ask your name?"

"If you've been around scientists, are you one yourself? What do you study?" A fellow intellectual, perhaps! This was exciting!
