[Stephanie's not pouting. She's not jealous. No matter what he says] I just don't know if Rhonda's all that great for you. I mean, she...she wears a polka dot hat! [Totally grasping at straws]

Hey! Watch it, jerk! I just got it all nice today and everything! [She playfully punches at him to get him to let go]

[Bucky laughs again, messing up her hair some more just for the heck of it before letting her go.]

Bucky! [she laughs along with him. Out fall the enlisting papers from her pocket]

[He stops laughing when those rejection notices fall out. Bending down to pick them up, he frowns at his friend.] Steph?

[She quickly snatches them out of his hand] What?

[She stuffs them in her pocket again] You would've stopped me if I told you.

By what? Collecting cans in my little red wagon? Bucky, I can't just sit back here and do that. There's women in the Army! [Granted, they're sitting behind desks and Stephanie an trip on dust]

Doesn't mean you have to run off to enemy lines 'n' risk your life! [Never mind the inherent hypocrisy in that statement. Bucky certainly didn't have to run off to enemy lines and risk his life. But this is different. This is Steph they're talking about.]

You don't have to collect tin cans, but there are other ways to help. Every bit helps and just cause you wouldn't be overseas doesn't mean what you'd be doing would be any less important.

I'm not one of those gals that can work in the factories. I need to be there, Bucky! And you're one to talk. Someone's gotta look after you when you run over into Axis territory like an idiot.

[He sighs with resignation, because he knows what she's saying is true.] I know. I just- [He stops himself.] Never mind. I'm just worried, is all.

It's not that, dammit! I just don't wanna lose you. The way I'm sure you don't wanna lose me. [Actually, he hadn't considered that Steph might be worried about him. He'd been too caught up in the idea of going off and serving his country, and he feels like a real jerk now. He rests his hand on her shoulder, offering a weak smile.]

Aw Bucky... [She gives him a small smile back] If I go, you can watch my back. Just like I can watch your back. [This was the first rejection she's gotten. Just means she's gonna keep trying] Because I don't feel like comforting Rhonda if you get yourself killed.
