[ He'd been watching a lot of those cooking shows lately, reading Bon Appetit magazine, all in an effort to gradually eliminate the TV dinners and take-out from his life. It would be nice, too, to be able to cook for other people on those rare occasions when he actually had someone over. Like now.

He'd been reasonably confident in his abilities to put together a simple meal of spaghetti with homemade sauce, but the sauce looks...way too thick. ]

Gotta play around with it a little. Does it taste good, though? [ So much for trying to impress her without a hitch. ]

[Annie was far more easy to impress than people might think. Living with a chef/caterer didn't do much for her food choices, especially since she usually worked late and had to eat out of vending machines or from the Agency Smithsonian cafeteria.

Reaching out with a small teaspoon to take a tiny bite from the pot, she blinked and then made a face.] Maybe some oregano and more tomato sauce... it's getting there.

Oregano. [ He repeats, with a slight nod, and then proceeds to search for it. 'Oh, don't tell me I don't have it,' he thinks as he pushes back bottles of herbs and spices. At last, he finds it, smiling triumphantly to himself. Fresh oregano would be better, but this will have to do. He sprinkles some in, stirs it around and smells it before sprinkling in a little more. And then he adds a few things to help thicken it. While that's simmering, he crosses his arms casually over his chest and turns to her. ]

I don't get a chance to cook as much as I should. I've got Mexican, Italian, and Chinese take-out on speed dial.

I completely understand. I practically live on it when the museum doesn't have me out trotting the globe. [The lie still comes as easily as it always does. Even easier, if she's honest with herself.] Add that to the opportunity to try new things when I'm in another city or country and you've got a recipe for disaster... or the need for new and expanding pants.

Glamorous job you got there. So out of all of the places you've been, what's your favorite?

[ He looks down, patting his own waistline, and chuckles a bit. ] Yeah, all that take-out's gonna catch up with me someday. I'm tryin' to get better at this gourmet cooking thing. [ He stirs the pot of sauce again, and amends: ] Scratch the 'gourmet' part.
