It was rare, very rare, that Happy actually had to act on the 'bodyguard' part of his job description. It was a part of his job that he took very seriously, though, and when it came up he never once hesitated. Not even when the dangers got bigger, the baddies got deadlier. He was still always there, running to Tony's aid in any way he could.

This hadn't been some big baddie. This wasn't the sort of villain that had a bizarre codename and an elaborate scheme. This was an angry woman with a gun who'd somehow gotten past the security check at a party. This was Happy doing his job without blinking, throwing himself in front of Tony before anyone really registered what was going on, and taking that bullet.

He'd gone down hard, and maybe if he was a god or a super soldier it would have been cake, but he wasn't. He was just a washed up old boxer working for his best friend, and as he struggled to cling to life in a Stark-funded hospital bed, he asked for the closest thing to a daughter that he had.

When your best friend is a deity from another world or a super soldier who runs into battle with a shield it is easy to forget not everyone in her life is more than just human. But Happy had always felt untouchable to her, a sort of warm friendly presence that would always be there with a kind word and too much knowledge for old cars. But he wasn’t safe. He wasn’t invincible and her knees had buckled when she got the call from the hospital and her Avengers.
She shuffles into the hospital room, giving a watery smile to Steve and Bruce as they convince the nurse to just let her in and stops when he reaches his bedside table.
“Hey Happy.”

Happy had been staring at the ceiling, zoning in and out of awareness, when he heard her voice. The bullet wasn't the type to give him a swift death, but there wasn't anything that the doctors could do anyway. He was too normal, he'd done all the typical neglectful things to his health, and now all they could do was try to manage his pain while he said his goodbyes.

Looking over at where she stood, he offered up an exhausted smile. She just looked so sad. "Hey, kid. Hey, it's okay. You're okay. C'mere." He flopped his hand at her, the movement taking far too much effort.

She moved to sit next to him on the far too small bed, careful not to disturb any of his IV’s or jostle his body. Taking his hand Darcy squeezes his fingers, giving him a smile that never quite reaches her eye. Happy was family it was true and undeniable at this point. For every bit of distance between she and her stepdad that had grown when she became a Poli-Sci major and joined SHIELD, Happy had slowly filled it with a ridiculous amount of patience and late night burger runs.
“How are you feeling Happy? Are the drugs helping?” She felt so useless. So frail and tiny, and useless to stop the ticking of the clock.

"Haven't felt this good in years," Happy tried to joke. "Should have hooked up to one of these things a long time ago."

He tried to take a deep breath to continue, he had a lot he needed to tell her. He couldn't, though, and whatever he was going to say dissolved into weak coughs for the moment.

Darcy flutters between him and trying to signal a nurse in case the coughing gets worse. She’s never seen him look so pale. He was always so damn well, happy and full of life. She’s always wondered why people insisted on describing their loved ones with that phrase until she met people like him and Thor, and to see it taken away now is just cruel.

"Darcy, 'm fine." Happy tries to get her to settle after his coughing stops, but the most he really has energy for his collapsing back against his pillows and catching his breath.

"I have--" And he can't even finish a sentence at the moment without stopping to breathe, but he'll be damned if he lets the nurses knock him out before he's finished talking to her. It's too important, and he may not wake up. "--to talk to you."

“You are such a bad liar Happy.” But she lets it go and reaches behind him to fluff the pillow, giving herself anything to do that might ease his pain a little, and pulls when satisfied, gripping his hand once more.
“I’m listening.”

"I don't have kids." He has to pause again, tries to squeeze her hand. "Always wanted 'em. No time, though."

There's another pause, but this time it's more to blink his eyes, to stop the tears that are prickling at his eyes. He blames the drugs for loosening his control. He really does. It won't matter soon anyway. "Met you, though. Daughter all grown up. Missed the headache."

Tears have started to fall and it's hard for Darcy to reach up and stop them, as her vision begins to blur. Giving him a watery smile she places laces her fingers with his and laughs with a hollow, depressed sound.
"You're the best adopted dad a girl could ask for."

"Hey, don't cry. I love you, kid." He smiles at her, swallowing, and takes a moment to make sure he'll be able to retain his composure. If his voice is wobbly, though, it's, well, it's understandable.

"Why I wanted to warn you. Leaving you most everything. Except maybe the Javelin. Tony might want the car."

She takes off her glasses and wipes away some of the tears with a sleeve, sniffling as she smiles. With the grief at hand his words are pushed back to her mind, days later when the paperwork is placed on her desk in the middle of her lunch hour as she pushes her now cold coffee in a circle it will finally hit home. But right now there's so many things to say and so little time for her to take them in.
"I'd rather have you."

"Sorry. Wish I could stay." He's just so tired. He knows it's the pain killers, and he knows that it's making it hard for him to remember everything he has to say, but he doesn't have enough energy to know what to do about it.

"You'll be okay, though. You'll be good. You'll get my pension. Set it up with Pepper already."

Why is talking so hard?

"Happy I...I'll do my best to help everybody. I don't know how but I will." Everything she says sounds meaninglessness to her own ears as she watches him slowly slip away.

"You're a good kid, Darcy." He wishes he could squeeze her hand, hug her, jump out of the bed and tell her it's all a really bad joke. He can't, though. He'll never be able to again. He can feel tears trailing down his face, and he can't do anything about that either.

"Do right by yourself too. Don't be too sad."
