THE TAG SOMEONE NEW MEMEHow It WorksSometimes, memes can be awkward. There's always that feeling that, if you don't know the person behind the curtain, you'll be intruding somehow. Don't worry. We've all been there. Still, it's nice to have that little reassurance that hey, it's cool. We're all in this together and we just want to play.

That's where ( Read more... )

Missing the train searchesforhim October 8 2012, 15:42:32 UTC
Jane cursed under her breath as the train doors closed just as she reached the bottom of the stairs. It would be at least ten minutes before another one came. That meant she was going to be late for work.

Meeting a doppleganger of sorts, eh? lol jack_flanagan October 8 2012, 16:00:10 UTC
Jack arrived to the same platform on her heels without meaning to. However, he wouldn't be late. Punctuality was a big thing for him and he was known to run early. He had plenty of time for the meeting and planned on picking up a coffee before arriving. Now some of that time would be spent waiting on the next train.

He didn't miss the frustration on the petite woman who was just in front of him. She was attractive while flustered which meant she was actually quite beautiful. Jack didn't stare outright. For one, he was reserved with strangers. And he wasn't the type to pick up women at random. Which explained why he was single and very much alone while nearly thirty-two.

However, that didn't mean he wasn't friendly. "Whatever you do, don't make the grave error and even think that the day can't get any worse. Murphy's Law is always in play," he offered with friendly eyes and a matching grin meant to offer sympathy.

"Oh god, don't say that." She had already woken up to find the power in her apartment had gone out, that thus her alarm had not gone off. She'd had to run out of the house without showering, and if either of them looked closely at her feet, they would find her wearing one black sock and one navy blue.

Jane too tended to keep to herself. As a scientist she spent long hours in the lab, alone, processing data and building equipment to gather more. She did not mind the quiet, and she never felt lonely, but there were still times when she'd succeed in a particularly arduous task and wish she had someone to celebrate with.

This guy was more handsome than anyone had any business being. And tall too - she had to crane her neck to look up at him. She grinned and giggled nervously, tucking her hair behind her ear and cursing her alarm again.

"You're not allowed to say things like that unless there's wood around to knock on."

I'M GLAD! ...Kinda love Jane. :) jack_flanagan October 8 2012, 16:53:15 UTC
His height didn't allow him a close look at her socks but he might have noticed the difference the longer they remained in the other's company. Jack was observant. He had to be for his line of work as a structural engineer. Noticing the little things meant huge things for architects that specialized in revitalizing and renovating buildings.

"Aye, my father always called me a block head. Does that count?" he said through a smile while raising a fist to knock on his head with knuckle. "If not I'll gladly run over to the bench and knock on it for ya'." His accent bled through as it had a tendency of doing while nervous. Beautiful women had a tendency of not laughing at his jokes. However, this one already seemed friendlier than most.

GOOD! I kinda love her too :) I'm going total AU if that's ok with you searchesforhim October 8 2012, 18:33:27 UTC
She noticed the accent this time, and she chuckled lightly at his joke, contemplating, if only for a second, letting him run over and knock on the bench, just to see him do it. She shifted her purse, half falling off her shoulder, then reached up and lightly tapped on his forehead.

"Your head doesn't look like a block to me. Or sound like one." She did not know what had gotten into her. She hadn't even had her morning cup of coffee. As soon as she'd pulled back, though, that old familiar anxiety she always felt when talking to a guy reappeared in force. She looked away, down the track as if there might actually be another train coming already, then back at him with a sheepish grin.

"Sorry. That was weird."

She's all yours to write as you please. <3 I should basically forget Jane as I know her from Thor? jack_flanagan October 8 2012, 20:04:31 UTC
He was still discernable with his Scottish accent unlike his Uncle Rory who often left his own family puzzled when seething mad. The accent only touched certain words when Jack had a case of nerves or anger. He often forgot about it until someone else pointed it out. New York was a city filled with people from all different paths. He looked forward to seeing where his was taking him now that it crossed hers ( ... )

Nah, she'll still be Jane, just without the Thor-specific events searchesforhim October 8 2012, 21:02:12 UTC
Jane didn't have much of a dress code, being a doctoral student. Since she'd dressed quickly, she was wearing the same jeans as the day before, several t-shirts layered onto one another for warmth, and a light jacket. She would ordinarily be wearing makeup and earrings, maybe even a necklace, but not today.

"I'm Jane. Foster. I'm an astrophysicist." This was usually the point at which guys turned and ran.

"So you're Scottish? Born there?"

Ah, gotcha! jack_flanagan October 8 2012, 21:58:07 UTC
Astrophysicist. That was unexpected. It didn't scare Jack but caught him off guard. Was she being facetious? She didn't really seem the type. He didn't expect to meet an astrophysicist on a subway platform in New York. --He never really expected to meet one at all, but if he were to, it would be at the planetarium or at least a library. A scientist would take a car or cab. ...His mind obviously went at rapid speeds trying to figure her out where he nearly forgot her name.

"No. Actually, I was born in Boston. Lived there for twelve years. Moved to Scotland when my father died. I stayed until university. ...If it helps any, my parents are both Scots and my mum did my schooling while I was here in the states," he explained with his gaze finally away from Jane for about half of what he said. It helped him stop his accent from bleeding through his words.

Jane didn't mention she was a working student because, well, she liked taking people by surprise. She liked not being what people assumed just by her appearance.

And there it was. He was losing interest. Why was it so hard to find a man who wasn't intimidated by an intelligent woman?

"How did you end up in New York?" It was easier for her to ask questions than to talk about herself. She didn't mind listening. She was a good listener. If he still wanted to talk to her, of course.

He had already given Jane a good background of himself and wasn't sure if she had been yanking his chain about her profession. However, Jack wouldn't blow off her question about him. It had to be a good sign that she was interested in him. He returned to watching her interestedly but tried keeping his sometimes intense gaze in check. "Since I earned my graduate degree, I worked in the UK, Australia, then here. I have a position pending in Boston..."

Jack hooked his thumbs into the front pockets of his jeans and rocked lightly on his heels. "Are you really an astrophysicist? You said it so quickly, and without any detail, that I'm wondering if it meant some kind of punch line that I missed. I don't always get all the quips thrown at me though I use a fair share of sarcasm myself. I've always loved the stars so I have to ask," he inquired almost bashfully through a sheepish smile.

She was starting to realize that he was just as shy and nervous as she was. He wasn't looking away because he wasn't interested - he was trying not to stare. She completely understood, because every time their eyes met, she wanted to keep looking into them. She felt like a total creeper.

"I wasn't kidding. I'm still working on my Ph.D., but yeah, I'm an astro-nerd." You've broken the dam, Jack. Here comes the flood of information.

"I've loved the stars since I was a kid. I grew up on the west coast and my dad was an astronomer. It was just the two of use, so we were really close and spent lots of nights camping and looking up at the sky. Now I'm working on proving a few theories I have about interstellar travel. I just got back from gathering data in New Mexico."

She grinned crookedly and chewed the inside of her bottom lip. So much for keeping the conversation on him. But he'd asked, and she didn't want him to think she was playing a joke on him.

"So're you freaked out now?"

Ah, she wasn't pulling his leg. Jack had only come up with it possibly meaning Jane was looking for stars and ...he wasn't one? He had felt a little pushy asking but was glad. He wasn't one to pry, never liked feeling as if he were intruding.

His mother did enough prying for the both of them. There was no such thing as an inappropriate question, only insufficient answers when it came to Rhona Flanagan. Jack always thought his mother missed her calling as an investigative reporter.

He had to smile when Jane mentioned her background. It was a warm, smitten grin. Her story reminded him of his only it was mostly Jack and his mother. Their bond indirectly prompted him to become builder, but she was also who he looked up at the stars with. On the east coast.

"So're you freaked out now?Her question nearly made him snort. When Jack thought about it, he could understand what made her ask. If there was something the men around the docks liked to complain about (other than their wives for those who were married), were women with a mind ( ... )

His smile was infectious. Add to it the fact that she was happy he was still talking to her after her mini-rant and she was practically beaming. Intrigued? It was too good to be true.

"I'm sorry, this doesn't happen very often, so I just have to make sure... are you asking me out?" He might be dressed like an ordinary construction worker, but Jane knows how hard becoming an engineer is. The prospect of going on a date with someone that she doesn't have to dumb herself down for is thrilling.

"Because if you are, I'm saying yes."

jack_flanagan October 9 2012, 17:16:20 UTC
Jane might think different of her rant if she ever met Rhona. Maybe that in itself was the draw to her. His mother could drive him crazy but she meant the world to Jack. If there was any truth to marrying who your parents are, then it made sense he wasn't remotely deterred by the astrophysicist.

Thrown, yes. Deterred, no. Jane caught him off guard again with her question. His smile grew, wondering how it was possible that she wasn't asked out often. Or maybe it was the conversation of him not being put off? There was question in his blue eyes though he smiled.

"Then it's a date!" Completely not his intention but Jack was no fool. She was smart, beautiful and completely interesting with how her conversations were all over the place. An announcement played before he could say anything further.

"Attention. The A train has been delayed with an estimated time of thirty to forty-five minutes. Any changes to this timeframe will be announced. Again, the A train has been delayed with an estimated time...Jack had time to take a cab but ( ... )

The announcement pretty well ruined the good mood she was building with her success in talking to Jack. She closed her eyes and sighed.

"Great. I'm supposed to meet my advisor and I was already gonna be late." She pulled her phone out of her back pocket.

"I'll just have to send him an e-mail and tell him I can't make it, which makes me look like a total flake but what else can I do?" She started typing out a message, then realized that underground she had no signal. That meant leaving - and that meant an end to whatever was happening with Jack. It was a tough call.

"Well, it looks like my day's free now. But you're probably on your way to work, right?" She was thinking that a breakfast date might be a good idea. It could be more relaxed and low key, which would make her more comfortable.
