THE TAG SOMEONE NEW MEMEHow It WorksSometimes, memes can be awkward. There's always that feeling that, if you don't know the person behind the curtain, you'll be intruding somehow. Don't worry. We've all been there. Still, it's nice to have that little reassurance that hey, it's cool. We're all in this together and we just want to play.
That's where

He didn't miss the frustration on the petite woman who was just in front of him. She was attractive while flustered which meant she was actually quite beautiful. Jack didn't stare outright. For one, he was reserved with strangers. And he wasn't the type to pick up women at random. Which explained why he was single and very much alone while nearly thirty-two.
However, that didn't mean he wasn't friendly. "Whatever you do, don't make the grave error and even think that the day can't get any worse. Murphy's Law is always in play," he offered with friendly eyes and a matching grin meant to offer sympathy.

Jane too tended to keep to herself. As a scientist she spent long hours in the lab, alone, processing data and building equipment to gather more. She did not mind the quiet, and she never felt lonely, but there were still times when she'd succeed in a particularly arduous task and wish she had someone to celebrate with.
This guy was more handsome than anyone had any business being. And tall too - she had to crane her neck to look up at him. She grinned and giggled nervously, tucking her hair behind her ear and cursing her alarm again.
"You're not allowed to say things like that unless there's wood around to knock on."

"Aye, my father always called me a block head. Does that count?" he said through a smile while raising a fist to knock on his head with knuckle. "If not I'll gladly run over to the bench and knock on it for ya'." His accent bled through as it had a tendency of doing while nervous. Beautiful women had a tendency of not laughing at his jokes. However, this one already seemed friendlier than most.

"Your head doesn't look like a block to me. Or sound like one." She did not know what had gotten into her. She hadn't even had her morning cup of coffee. As soon as she'd pulled back, though, that old familiar anxiety she always felt when talking to a guy reappeared in force. She looked away, down the track as if there might actually be another train coming already, then back at him with a sheepish grin.
"Sorry. That was weird."

"I'm Jane. Foster. I'm an astrophysicist." This was usually the point at which guys turned and ran.
"So you're Scottish? Born there?"
Reply
"No. Actually, I was born in Boston. Lived there for twelve years. Moved to Scotland when my father died. I stayed until university. ...If it helps any, my parents are both Scots and my mum did my schooling while I was here in the states," he explained with his gaze finally away from Jane for about half of what he said. It helped him stop his accent from bleeding through his words.

And there it was. He was losing interest. Why was it so hard to find a man who wasn't intimidated by an intelligent woman?
"How did you end up in New York?" It was easier for her to ask questions than to talk about herself. She didn't mind listening. She was a good listener. If he still wanted to talk to her, of course.

Jack hooked his thumbs into the front pockets of his jeans and rocked lightly on his heels. "Are you really an astrophysicist? You said it so quickly, and without any detail, that I'm wondering if it meant some kind of punch line that I missed. I don't always get all the quips thrown at me though I use a fair share of sarcasm myself. I've always loved the stars so I have to ask," he inquired almost bashfully through a sheepish smile.

"I wasn't kidding. I'm still working on my Ph.D., but yeah, I'm an astro-nerd." You've broken the dam, Jack. Here comes the flood of information.
"I've loved the stars since I was a kid. I grew up on the west coast and my dad was an astronomer. It was just the two of use, so we were really close and spent lots of nights camping and looking up at the sky. Now I'm working on proving a few theories I have about interstellar travel. I just got back from gathering data in New Mexico."
She grinned crookedly and chewed the inside of her bottom lip. So much for keeping the conversation on him. But he'd asked, and she didn't want him to think she was playing a joke on him.
"So're you freaked out now?"

His mother did enough prying for the both of them. There was no such thing as an inappropriate question, only insufficient answers when it came to Rhona Flanagan. Jack always thought his mother missed her calling as an investigative reporter.
He had to smile when Jane mentioned her background. It was a warm, smitten grin. Her story reminded him of his only it was mostly Jack and his mother. Their bond indirectly prompted him to become builder, but she was also who he looked up at the stars with. On the east coast.
"So're you freaked out now?Her question nearly made him snort. When Jack thought about it, he could understand what made her ask. If there was something the men around the docks liked to complain about (other than their wives for those who were married), were women with a mind ( ... )

"I'm sorry, this doesn't happen very often, so I just have to make sure... are you asking me out?" He might be dressed like an ordinary construction worker, but Jane knows how hard becoming an engineer is. The prospect of going on a date with someone that she doesn't have to dumb herself down for is thrilling.
"Because if you are, I'm saying yes."

Thrown, yes. Deterred, no. Jane caught him off guard again with her question. His smile grew, wondering how it was possible that she wasn't asked out often. Or maybe it was the conversation of him not being put off? There was question in his blue eyes though he smiled.
"Then it's a date!" Completely not his intention but Jack was no fool. She was smart, beautiful and completely interesting with how her conversations were all over the place. An announcement played before he could say anything further.
"Attention. The A train has been delayed with an estimated time of thirty to forty-five minutes. Any changes to this timeframe will be announced. Again, the A train has been delayed with an estimated time...Jack had time to take a cab but ( ... )

"Great. I'm supposed to meet my advisor and I was already gonna be late." She pulled her phone out of her back pocket.
"I'll just have to send him an e-mail and tell him I can't make it, which makes me look like a total flake but what else can I do?" She started typing out a message, then realized that underground she had no signal. That meant leaving - and that meant an end to whatever was happening with Jack. It was a tough call.
"Well, it looks like my day's free now. But you're probably on your way to work, right?" She was thinking that a breakfast date might be a good idea. It could be more relaxed and low key, which would make her more comfortable.
