"Nine. Definitely a nine." Jack was making the best of this speed dating event he had been suckered into and grinned accordingly at the woman in front of him. He didn't know how labeling a potential dating partner proved fruitful but the beauty in front of him was worth a try. Even if she did seem a tad young for him.
Avery was only there because her friend had talked her into it. She had thought she would be able to sit in a corner, and play games on her tablet while her friend took part in it. However, her friend had other plans and she was placed at a table with a name card announcing who she was.
Most of the men were boring, and had tried too hard to convince her of how wonderful they were. There were a few lies, too, because she was pretty sure that one guy wasn't related to the CEO of Google. Avery was about to stand up and leave when Jack sat down.
And, she had to say, he was the most handsome of the bunch and when he'd answered her question like that, her cheeks warmed with an unexpected blush.
"Thanks," she said, her smile the brightest it had been all night. "I'm going to break the scale now and say you're an eleven, and probably the best-looking guy here."
Her response brought some color to his cheeks. Jack wasn't expecting it. He hadn't primped for the event, not thinking highly of it, and now he only had a few minutes to make up for his ill planning.
"Is that the truth or are you just passing the time amusing yourself by making men blush?" There was no hiding the slight tint to his neck and face, even with the light beard he kept. She was easily in the top three of beautiful women there and he had been honest in his answer.
Avery, he read her name tag. Her name seemed authentic. She probably wondered if he was honest about his; it wasn't very unique. For the first time in the past half hour, Jack appeared engaged in conversation.
He would never tire of garnering this type of attention from Maria. Regardless of the slight color to his cheeks. Jack collected her up snug in his arms. "That's only because there is no scale to possibly rate you on. Your beauty is a wonder for all mankind."
"Laying it on a little thick, aren't you?" Oh, but she didn't mind one bit. It had taken her some time to get used to flirting with him, but now she could dish out just as good as he could.
