"It wasn't ten minutes. Today you were going to be late and you gave me a time, and still surpassed it by a half hour. Last week it was two hours. Now we're spending less and less time together."

Clay sighed, "I want to know what's going on."

"Last week I had car trouble," she said, extremely defensive. His sigh didn't stop her from sitting up and pushing her hair back, automatically preparing for the fight she could tell was coming. "You say you want to know what's going on, but really you want to interrogate me."

Clay sensed that Annie was getting defensive, not that it was that hard. He responded as calmly and rationally as possible.

"No Annie, I don't want to interrogate you. I want to know what's going on. I want to know what's got you upset, bothered or whatever else. I want to help my wife with whatever it is, and if it's something I've done or am doing, I want to know so I can fix it."

"I'm not the one that's bothered, you are. I said I was sorry, why does it have to be a thing? It's not you. Just..." She sat back and reached for her bedside lamp. "Start making dinner for one if you're so worried about me being late. I'll pick up something on the way home."

He realized very quickly that this wasn't a fight he was going to win, but he had to push it just a little harder, "I don't want to do that. I want to sit and have dinner with my wife. I want you to sit on the couch with me when I read the paper Sunday mornings, a lot of things just haven't been the same."

"Then you're going to have to deal with the fact that sometimes? I'm going to be late." Annie felt attacked, blindsided and a host of other things and deep-breathing wasn't going to stop her from crying if he didn't lighten up. "Things haven't been the same for a long time, Clayton."

"I know they haven't and I can't figure out why. Then tonight you come home smelling like Jai. I don't know what to think anymore." There was nothing accusatory about his statement, he was just trying to put the pieces together and it was obvious he couldn't.

He may not have intended for anything accusatory to come of that statement, but it was obvious what Annie took away from it. All color drained from her face and she threw back the covers and got out bed. Without a word, she picked up her bathrobe and left the room.

Clay counted to fifty, got up, and went looking for his wife. Something was bothering her, and now it was bothering him. Whenever Clay felt that something wasn't right, it usually wasn't, and he was sure his instincts hadn't deadened that much since becoming director.

Oddly enough, she hadn't gone to her office. She'd gone downstairs and was curled into their fluffy red couch, her bathrobe tight around her. When she heard him coming down the stairs, she said, "I didn't sleep with Jai."

"Well that's something, and I really didn't think you would." Clay sat down next to Annie's feet on the other side of the couch, "So he really did dump his cologne on you?"

A little levity might be appreciated, at least it hoped it would be appreciated.

"No." Annie wasn't in the mood for levity. "He gave me a hug after he caught me coming out of a session with the CIA shrink." She said it without much emotion before turning to look at him, or where he should be, in the darkness.

Annie's admission concerning the Agency Shrink took him by surprise, "I didn't know you were seeing the Doctor beyond what was SOP." The guilt for his half an accusation was evident in his voice.

"Is that why you've been late?"

"Sometimes we go over. I need a little extra time to compose myself." She shrugged and went back to leaning against the side of the couch. "There were a couple things that I needed to talk over with someone."

She tried to play it off. "Sorry I've been late."

"It's okay," and it really was, "I'm sorry for that insane accusation."

Clay was quiet for a while, just sitting with Annie on the couch before speaking again, "Are you comfortable telling me about it?"

Believe it or not, he was capable of just listening.
