He has no real reason to be in Diamond Castle - not one that can be explained, in any case - and he'd picked a little-used back hallway to slip around the borders, hopefully unseen.

Unfortunately not little-used enough.

He'd found himself glancing at the Ace of Diamonds before, from a distance, but they'd never even exchanged so much as a nod. This isn't the first face-to-face meeting he would have hoped for.

SHOCKING. truly. ishineon November 1 2011, 05:38:43 UTC
On the upside, she's only a little sloshed, going by how little the bottle in her hand's been depleted. That means a lower likelihood of her randomly brandishing a knife at him. On the downside, she's only a little sloshed, which means her critical thinking isn't hampered. That means a higher likelihood of her deliberately brandishing a knife at him.

"Skulking around isn't the usual thing for a Card to do in another Suit's castle."

Well, there's no knife yet. He has one of his own, but any flash of a blade means he's already lost. He knows her reputation.

"Terribly rude of me," he admits, keeping both hands in view as his eyes flick down to the bottle and back up. There's no reason for her to have taken note of him before now; perhaps he can manage this without it becoming an unpleasant incident. "I'm just on my way out, Milady."

"Then you've turned yourself around rather; the nearest door out is in the direction you've just come from." Her head tilts, taking in his features. "You're a Club, aren't you? A new one. What reason have you to be here?"

Is it? His eyes move over the hallway as he thinks back to his path up to this point. Damn.

It might be because it's late, or the danger of this situation, but he ducks his head with a smile, rubbing at the back of his neck. "I am a Club, and new. And trying to learn my way," he says wryly. "Not that well, apparently. I'm sorry, Milady."

She sniffs, apparently deciding that he's no danger. "It would be wise to learn where you aren't welcome, to start with. I'd not want to strain relations with Argine and Alexander over such a trivial incident."

There's a shift in her demeanour as she steps closer. Perhaps that knife isn't long in coming after all.

The shift in his own balance is a clue that he isn't helpless, whether or not he turns out harmless, and his eyes move to her free hand and back to her face. Still no knife, but that could change in a moment.

"I shouldn't wish that either," he says, entirely honestly. "Could there be something I might do to make up for my trespass, Milady?"

Her brows are arched as she considers him, and then the bottle in her hand. She's been drinking too often lately... "Perhaps there is. How good do you think you are at holding your liquor?"

This time there's genuine surprise in Dafydd's wordless pause. "I've...been known to hold my own, Milady," he answers slowly, wondering what she could have in mind.

can you hear me tsking from here. can you. I have been practising my lufftsking. ishineon November 1 2011, 07:38:56 UTC
"Come along, then. It's dreadfully boring to be drinking alone." And off she sweeps, clearly expecting him to follow.

Did she just roundaboutly invite him to a drinking contest? Or at least to drinking with her? What?

He has no idea what, and it takes him a few startled moments before he's remembered himself. Whatever her reason for asking, he isn't one to ignore her direct order.

He hurries to catch up and falls into place a few paces behind and to her right, trailing her obediently. "Yes, ma'am."

All the castles in the Deck are dotted with deserted rooms, although Diamond Castle probably has the cleanest of them, thanks to Isaac. It's one of these that Säde leads him into; her rooms are just too personal, and it wouldn't do to be so obviously drinking again with others around the way she had a week or so ago. No, one drinking partner would be ideal, and one she can blackmail into not talking is just perfect.

No glasses, though. Drat. So instead of pouring him a drink, she'll just offer him the bottle instead.

With an increasingly bemused expression, he follows the Ace to this unused yet spotless sitting room. Presumably she isn't leading him here to kill him, she could have done that in the hallway. Is he going to be framed for something?

Apparently not. There's no one else here. No one anywhere nearby, if he's right about his estimates. The bottle she offers is the same one she's been drinking from, clearly not poisoned, and thus far he still hasn't seen a knife in evidence, so there's really only one course of action. He accepts the bottle and takes a drink.

This is not the way he'd anticipated the evening going.

The actions of the drunk (even if she's currently only mildly so) are often baffling. Säde's tendency to polarise into friendliness or violence when she's drunk is simply one aspect stemming from this.

Fortunately or unfortunately, this evening she's inclined towards friendliness. Hence after some passing of the bottle back and forth, she starts asking about how he likes the Deck so far.

Better friendliness than being chased down with a knife. It's stilted at first but surprisingly easy to talk about how he's found the Deck once he discovers she ventures out on occasion. The differences between inside and outside, even without revealing much of his own past, occupy them as the bottle continues.

And as the level of the bottle goes down, innocuous doesn't seem to matter so much. "It's not the hierarchy that's odd," he says, managing the word quite well. "It's when someone's been here their whole life. I haven't left again yet, but I can't picture never leaving."

At this level of intoxication, Säde isn't quite slurring yet, but there's a definite accent emerging to her words. It's subtle at the moment, but it's there. "I suppose it's better the devil you know, for them. It's familiar and safe here; the only strangers are the ones who stop being strangers for a while." Glug, and then handing the bottle back to him. "Not that I approve of that, but not it's a common mentality, even outside."
