Her heels clicked through the dark halls of Providence in the late night. The recent date had gone well. He reserved several restaurants of her pick and they ended up walking through central park, talking about everything that came to mind. He bought her champagne and everything. To be honest, she did enjoy herself.

But she was still going to break it off. It just felt wrong somehow. She certainly didn't feel good about that relationship. Yeah, he was nice, but he just wasn't-

She sighed, stretching her neck and heading back to her room. She hadn't talked to him since then. He didn't allow it. The only times she ever heard his voice was during missions and it was always cold and rushed. She hated this.

Six was...coping...since he'd broken things off with Holiday. It was for her own good. She didn't need to get caught up with someone with so much baggage as him. She deserved to be happy and not have to sleep with one eye open.

Right. He needed to keep that in mind.

He was heading back to his own quarters, eyes focused on the floor. He'd been just wandering around for a while, trying to wear himself out and make his mind shut up. Thinking he was alone, his face was a bit melancholy.

She was doing the same. Keeping her eyes on her feet, watching the repetitive task of walking. At this right, she might walk right on pass her room and end up at the roof or something, but she doesn't really care.

Until she sees another pair of feet ahead of her. Looking up, startled, she suddenly stops.

She... doesn't know what to do. What to say. He broke it off, maybe she should- She didn't know. Did he even notice her there? Had he been following? She doesn't know!

Six saw her shoes and looked up at her, careful not to let his eyes linger on anything but her face. "Hello, Doctor. You look nice."

She really did judging from that brief glance he'd allowed himself.

"Thanks."

It was halfhearted, at best. She wanted to run up to him and hug him or something, but he... would just shove her off. That would hurt more than just standing there did.

But she wanted to. She wanted to fight with him. She wanted to beg him. She wasn't even sure if he was worth it. He didn't trust her, so why bother?

But it still hurt and she still wanted to.

Six simply put his hands in his pockets, looking down and away.

"How have things been going?"

He wanted to know she was doing all right. Things were awkward enough between them. Keeping things professional after everything they'd been through together was...difficult.

Well... he wasn't trying to get away from her as fast as he could. Was that good thing?

It took her a beat of silence to even consider a decent, honest answer to his question. "It's going..."

Not really even that. Work was and that was about all she could focus on for the last few weeks. Work until she was a zombie, which would usually take a couple days straight, then go to bed for a dreamless sleep for a few hours. At least she had made some decent progress. White was happy about that.

"... What about you?" You were the one that left her, so you must be doing great.

"Fine," he responded automatically. "I'm glad you're doing well for yourself."

Part of him wanted to ask her to forgive him right there. Or at least to understand his reasons even if she couldn't do that. He wanted her safe and happy, and guaranteed she wouldn't get that with him.

People he got close to got caught up in the crossfire, or they simply died for seemingly senseless reasons. He was so tired of losing the important people in his life, particularly if he was the root cause.

He started to step around her. "I should probably let you get some sleep."

He wasn't going to be getting much of it. Seeing her again like this brought to mind what few dates they'd had. The memories would keep him up for hours.

Wait, he was- "Six!"

... No, no, stop. What are you doing? He was the one that broke it off. He was the one that didn't want her.

But, she wanted-... She hated this. She wanted to beg him right here, tell him that she was so damn sorry for whatever she did, that it would never happen again, but would it make a difference? And what about his excuse? Breaking up in order to save her. How could she prove to him how much bull that was?

She just looks down to the floor, trying to swallow all those words.

Six froze at his name, coming to a full stop. He waited, wondering what she was going to say or do.

When nothing else came, he asked cautiously, not looking at her, "Was there something you needed, Doctor?"

Professional. Keep it professional. Don't put her in the sniper's scope.

So what if his heart was broken by the choice he'd made? A broken heart can be pieced back together. He'd done it before, after all. As long as she was alive and happy, he could be content.

"I-"

Now she was just trying to think of an excuse. But she didn't want to walk away. And she didn't want him to leave. What could she say? What should she say? She shouldn't beg him to come back. He was the one that-

She wanted to hold on to him and bury her face on him somewhere. She wanted to do something... but she hated his voice right now. It stayed on that same level and there was always her title instead of her name. Her LAST name would be welcome right now. Just don't treat like she's-

Right. Need to reply. She still didn't know what to say. She didn't even trust her voice.

So, she just... turned away. It wasn't like she was looking at him, anyway.

Six waited patiently. He should probably get walking, head back to his room and just try and get some sleep.

Instead, he asked, "You're happy with him, aren't you?"

The tone was broken yet desperately hopeful.

Tell me I did the right thing. Tell me that I gave you the better option.

No. "He's... nice." Did she look happy, Six? "We had fun." And she was going to break it off with him first thing in the morning. "... He's just a guy." He's not you.

God, maybe she should just walk away now... What was she supposed to tell him? What was she supposed to do? How could she fix all of this? If he would just tell her then she'd do it.

She had fun but she didn't sound happy.

"...You like him?"

That hint of desperation was stronger this time.

Tell me I did something right for you...

"... He's nice," she said again after a minute of silence. It was the truth. He was a good guy, had money, fun to hang out with, put her first, etc, etc. He wasn't a bad guy. She did like him.

But not like that. Not that much. Not nearly that much. Maybe there was someone else out there, but it wouldn't be the same. Not even close. They had something that was very real.

And she could hear something in his voice, but she wasn't even sure what it was. She had a guess and there was a time where she would know what it was, but now she wasn't even sure. She felt like she didn't know him.

"He's alright."

Now, she just felt tired...
