$40k is a lot, and tuition benefits are super valuable. And you could visit me.
Most people at the U can get some kind of subsidy on bus passes. It's a really long bus ride for you though, especially at rush hour.
What if you drove every day to the St. Paul campus (about 20 mins from you guys and non-trafficy), parked there, then took the free campus connector bus to the main campus? The campus connector has its lanes, so it only takes 15 mins even at rush hour.
P.S. I have access to the parking spot database. Looks like parking in the less-desirable lots is $61/mo with no wait list, while the nice lots are $90 or $117 and have humongous wait lists. I could send you a list if you're really worried about it....
The bus trip from my house only requires me to leave about 20 minutes earlier than I already do to drive to St. Paul. Benefit is that I can sleep or read or something on the way to work instead of sitting in stop-n-go traffic. Un-benefits are that I'm not bus-savvy and if I need to go anywhere else after work I'd have to either figure out the bus system or go back, get my car, and go back out. :P
As for parking, I don't really mind less-desireable lots. Walking is good for you, right? ;) And I usually get to work way early on account of my efforts to miss rush-hour hell, so if I needed an extra 10-15mins to walk to my building it wouldn't be a huge big deal.
Plus, the Daniel benefits are considerable! Can't get those just anywhere! :)
