LJ seems quiet with so many of my friends in Brighton yesterday for BiFestIt did sound rather fab and enticing, but I've been pootling along quite productively at home

For no particular reason[1] other than it looked interesting[2], I've just spent several hours reading the Education Otherwise site and pages linked from it. I wish I'd had access to this sort of perspective (even though, for obvious reasons, it is mostly parent-centric) when I was at school, though I can only speculate on what the ultimate effects of such a 'dangerous' idea may have been[3].

Nothing to do with EO, but I also know a very good book by Grace Llewelyn (sp?) called something like "How to quit school and get a real life and an education", which is aimed directly at young people - say ages 9, 10 upward or so. It includes a whole section on how to broach the idea with your parents and reassure them.

Aside from the direct effect on the home-ed families, it sounds as though the sheer scale of the inspecting they're thinking of doing would be a fairly monumental waste of time and money which could be far better spent elsewhere

Update: I think I've found out why the families to children ratio was so implausible - the children figure included not just the electively HBE ones, but also children educated at home in other ways, e.g. off school with long term illness and getting teaching from tutors sent by the local authority. At least, that might be the answer.
