I just started to add the fan-writers I love to my friends list here b/c I (think? believe? understand?) ought to receive their updates in my box, instead of checking each single journal's entry every time I use Internet

In my experience, most people liked being friended. :-) You will see your friends' posts updated on your Friends page, but if you want to be notified in your email about new posts, you can go to a person's User Info page and click on Track User. You'll get posts as soon as they go up.

LOL! I'm not very good at LJ myself. What I've learned I've gotten over time and from patient, knowledgeable friends. ;-)
