[ Warily; ]

Much the same as any other bulwark, I'd imagine -- by knowing your enemy.

[ Why hello there, lanky man dressed in fancy blue robes. You seem to have caught the attention of a teenage boy sitting at the edge of the fountain who is busy making faces at his soggy sneakers like they've somehow offended them. When he looks up and notices the stranger's lost expression, he whistles a twittering bird-call to catch his attention. No doubt he's newly transplanted as well, so he can relate. ]

[ He's pretty deep in thought by now, and more concerned with the state of things than anything else. The bird-call falls around his ears like an errant breeze; he's staring into the fountain while standing a few feet away from it, eyes aglow, almost as if trying to decipher its inner workings.

Wanna try again? ]

[ If Mouse were the chatty type, he'd no doubt just call out to the guy. But since he's not, he just whistles a little louder, scrambling to his feet as he does so. It's habit that finds him shoving both of his hands wrist-deep into the pockets of his sweatshirt.

He makes it a point not to approach; if anything, he shuffles a step and a half back. The boy peers at the stranger with a curious expression and then whistles again -- sharp and bright this time -- abandoning any pretense at birdsong. ]

[ Okay, now that gets his attention -- Jace's cowled head snaps up, his bright blue eyes focusing on the boy standing near the edge of the fountain, whistling at him. He perks a shadowed eyebrow, then waits for the boy to get on with whatever he needed his attention for...But not before reaching out and skimming the top of his mind to scan his intentions. ]

I agree.

Mm. Perhaps finding shelter wouldn't be a bad idea, though.

I would imagine sleeping in the streets to be uncomfortable at best.

You would be surprised.

[ A beat. ]

Where might I find lodging?

That's why people tend to lay out traps ahead of time.

Which is, arguably, both offensive and defensive.

The best defense is a good offense.
