It had been obvious to most that the second division captain had been in better spirits recently. She had always carried herself with pride, though now she seemed to have a bit of a spring in her step, and her squad members had even caught her daydreaming under a shower of sakura petals. But she hadn’t let it affect her duties. In fact, it seemed like she had been working harder than usual, if that was even possible for her.

Her hard work was not only because of her great dedication to the Gotei 13. Ever since her brief moment of reconciliation with her old companion Yoruichi, the other woman had been occupying her thoughts. Her Goddess had returned to her after a very long century, and she could not remember being happier before in her life. Since she had been working so hard, she had finished all of her work for the next day, and had received permission to do some reconnaissance in the living world.

Passing through the gate she found herself restricted by the gigai she had obtained. According to the information Rukia had provided, it was only a short walk from where the gate had dumped her out to get to Urahara’s store. After a few clumsy steps she was used to the artificial body, and it only took her a few minutes to locate the shop. Things seemed peaceful enough, so she assumed it would not be a problem for her to spend some time doing as she pleased.

She found the store empty and let herself into the back room, quietly looking through the rooms. This is where Yoruichi had been staying for the last century. She wondered which room belonged to the dark skinned girl, until she peered through one doorway and found herself staring at Yoruichi’s sleeping body sprawled out on top of her futon. Feeling a warmth in her cheek, she silently tiptoed next to her, at first watching her sleeping face, but eventually eyes tracing down to find a heavily bandaged arm. A small squeal escaped her mouth before she could catch herself, and the sleeping girl was up in a flash, flipping her over and pinning her to the ground with her good arm. “Soi!” she exclaimed, a shocked look on her face.

“Yoruichi-sa-“ she said before catching herself, eyes locked on those of the girl above her. It was a strange welcome; especially since it was only the second time they’d seen each other in over 100 years. The girl grinned back at her and pulled her up, hugging her and ruffling her short hair.

“You shouldn’t surprise me like that,” she said, laughing. Reaching under her pillow she pulled out a hidden bottle of sake and a couple dishes, holding them up in the air. “Now that we’ve got time, we should celebrate, ne?”

After the pale shinigami recovered from the sudden attack, she shook her head and put a hand out to touch Yoruichi’s bandaged shoulder. “Yoruichi, you should be resting, you’re injured!”

Yoruichi’s response was to simply stare at the wall, remembering the short battle with the arrancar. “It’s okay, I’m fine. You don’t need to worry.” But that wasn’t enough, not for the girl that had worshipped her for so long. Yoruichi felt a warmth against her arm and looked back down to find the Soi Fong leaning over, holding the injured arm lightly and resting her head on a dark shoulder. She chuckled and gently lifted the girl’s head, cooing, “Really, I’m fine.”

It was slightly watery eyes that looked back into Yoruichi’s golden ones. Her voice soft but steady, Soi Fong replied, “but that shouldn’t happen to you. I promised…I promised I’d protect you.” She managed a weak smile, so happy to be with the person she had always cared about the most again. She brought her arm up to her face, soaking up the tears, not wanting to look weak in front of her.

As she brought it down she found the cat-like ex-shinigami had slid back over to her bed and was stretching out before laying her head down in Soi Fong’s lap. Grinning, she replied, “you still planning on keeping that silly promise?” She yawned and rolled over, her hand falling over one of her friend’s and squeezing lightly.

A warm smile coming to her own face, Soi Fong nodded and whispered, “Yes, I do.” She let her free hand drift into the silky violet hair in front of her, leaning back against the wall and closing her eyes. This had definitely been worth the extra work at home.
