Dragonsong and Dragonsinger are coming-of-age novels, and as such Menolly's personality changes as she grows up in the books.
She starts Dragonsong with very little sense of self-worth or sense that she can help herself. By the end of Dragonsinger Menolly is still overly modest, but has stopped feeling worthless, and has a normal appreciation that what she does can affect the life she leads. In later books she's gotten over the excessive modesty; I plan to stick to having some of it, and in fact to take away some of her self-worth at first
