Fanfic pet peeve

You know what I really dislike? When authors use character derailment in their fanfics to remove or discredit the character, who is in the way of the featured pairing of the story.

Do you mean they write someone OOC so that they can bash and remove him/her? Urgh. :-(

Yes, exactly. I had just run into a fic that had made Riley into a manipulative, mean asshole when I posted this the other day. And the fact that the author warned that she'd written "I'm not a Riley hater, but I need him to be something Buffy doesn't want." in her notes didn't help.

It happens in published fiction too. I remember that there is a sequel to Phantom of the Opera where Raoul is suddenly alcoholic and a gambler. GAH. Not to mention that it was BAD. *g*

Oh my God, and that "official" sequel of Dracula. Mina Harker sounds more like Drusilla than anyone else!
