Canon: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya / Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
Character: Kyon
Timeline: The end of the first novel.
Personality: Kyon is normal. In fact, he's the only normal person in the whole series. His whole purpose is being the normal one, or as you could also call it the 'only sane guy'. Whereas everyone else is constantly doing supernatural things or just non-supernatural, but still ridiculous things, Kyon is the one who doesn't join in unless he's forced to. He enjoys his normalcy greatly (in his character/image song he even sings 'normalcy is the best!') and franctically tries to keep up his normal life even as everything around him is slowly becoming more and more weird. Kyon is someone who wants to be normal more than anything and doesn't want to stand out - practically the polar opposite to Haruhi in that way. In the novel he goes to great lengths to ramble about how even if he'd like a special manga-like life, he would prefer to be the sidekick who gives advice instead of the hero who gets into all sorts of problems. Kyon is someone who prefers to blend in with the crowd or stay on the background.
It can be said that Kyon is partly because of this a person who doesn't want to be dragged into ridiculous activites (especially Haruhi's), he just wants to be left alone and keep on living his normal life. In fact, most of his character song and snarky thoughts in the series center around this wish. It's not just because of his wish for normalcy but also because Kyon, like most teenage boys, is lazy. He doesn't feel like putting much effort into something unless it's really worth it. At the start of the novel he complains about the fast uphill climb to school and tells about how he knows that it would be much easier if he would just get out of bed ten minutes earlier so he could take his time to climb up the hill, but those ten minutes of sleep are too precious for him to give up. Thus he does it the hard way and has to hurry his way to the top. He also enjoys napping and even falls asleep in public places sometimes (one canon example is the library).
Kyon is an incredibly sceptic and sarcastic person. He's practically the prototype of a
deadpan snarker. He's the narrator of the story, so his thoughts are always shown in the text and often they're sarcastic quips to whatever is going on. He always has a comment on every single one of Haruhi's ridiculous actions, although he doesn't always voice them out loud. Kyon is not even below making sarcastic quips at himself too whenever he does something stupid (which usually consists of going along with Haruhi's plans). His sceptic side shows in the fact that he doesn't easily believe something - at the start of the novel he explains that even as a child he already knew that the existence of an old guy who only worked on Christmas and gave everyone presents was highly dubious. He doesn't even believe Yuki, Mikuru and Itsuki when they first explain who they really are to him. He really used to believe in aliens, time travellers, espers and the like when he was younger though and really wanted them to appear (quite like Haruhi), but somewhere around middle school he gave up on those thoughts and accepted the reality of everyday in which these supernatural things don't exist. Part of him still wants to believe; he often mentions (although never out loud) that he is envious of Haruhi because she never gave up persuing the supernatural, because she never gave up in believing them. Kyon's scepticism did take a blow after he witnessed all of Yuki, Mikuru and Itsuki's supernatural happenings.
But even though his thoughts can often be sarcastic or sceptic, Kyon is generally nice to people as long as they are nice to him and aren't being too ridiculous. He's actually the type of person that tries to look after the people he cares about. Examples are the many times he attempts to save Mikuru from Haruhi's groping in the series or his attempts to make Yuki a bit more normal/sociable, for example when he takes her to the library.
Kyon is also a normal teenage boy in another way; he has a healthy interest in cute girls. Although he doesn't quite go as over the top as Taniguchi (who rated all the girls in his year in school) he still makes a few side comments in his narration about girls looking cute. He especially says a lot about Mikuru, who he finds incredibly cute and hot and several times hopes t make a move on but never does. But he also comments on Yuki (for example how she looks cuter without the glasses) and Haruhi, who he ends up actually kissing in the end.
Background: Kyon, appropriately enough, always lived a normal life with his parents and little sister. In fact, there was nothing special about his life at all. Until he entered high school.
"As I graduated from middle school, I also graduated from those childish dreams and became accustomed to the routine of this world. And so I entered high school with no particular vision in mind and met her..."
He met Haruhi Suzumiya.
He first noticed her during class-wide introductions, when Haruhi obviously stood out from the rest due to her proclamation that all aliens, time travellers and espers should come to her and that she had no time for normal people. At first Kyon's reaction was much like the rest of the class', but after a while he started talking to Haruhi. And enough though Haruhi was usually very dismissive during their conversations they started talking more and more. And then Kyon did what he considered one of the dumbest actions in his life; he gave Haruhi the idea to start the SOS Brigade and was unwillingly forced into being the first member by Haruhi. He could practically only watch as Haruhi dragged more (more or less) unwilling victims into the club. The quiet and emotionless Yuki Nagato, the very cute Mikuru Asahina and the mysterious smiling Itsuki Koizumi. It didn't take long for wacky antics to become the order of the day, like Haruhi dressing Mikuru and herself up as bunny girls or Haruhi dragging all of them out on a free days to go on a search for the supernatural and naturally come up with nothing in the end.
Even though it was already different from the standard life he had lived up to that point, it was only getting worse from that point on. One day Kyon met up with Yuki in her (rather eccentric) apartment and she told him that she was actually an artificial human created by the Data Integration Thought Entity, only created for the purpose of observing Haruhi Suzumiya who apparently had the ability to create huge amounts of data out of nowhere.
Needless to say, Kyon didn't believe her at all.
But then soon after Mikuru and Itsuki talked to him alone about similair things - Mikuru confessed she was a time traveller who came here from the future to find out about why they couldn't go further than three years back into the future, to find out about a time block created by Haruhi. And Itsuki said he was an esper, and that Haruhi was no less than a being equivalent to a god.
Kyon shrugged that off as well. It wasn't exactly that he didn't believe it, but more that he didn't want to believe things like that. But he didn't have much of a choice but to believe in it after all three of them showed their powers to him. First he was attacked by a once friendly classmate, Ryouko Asakura, who was the same sort of artificial human as Yuki and intended to kill him to observe Haruhi's reaction to his death. It was only because he was saved by Yuki just in time that Kyon is still alive after that assault. The next thing he encountered was the future adult Mikuru Assahina and then Itsuki showed him his powers - whenever Haruhi felt negative emotions a 'closed space' was created somewhere, a sort of seperate dimension in which blue giants destroyed everything. Itsuki showed Kyon once of these 'closed spaces' and how he as an esper was able to fight the blue giants. Yes, after all this Kyon practically had no choice but to believe those three's words.
But just when he surrendered and accepted that aliens, time travellers and espers really existed, the worst possible scenario occured. One night when he went to sleep he woke up in a gray world - a closed space. With him and Haruhi being the only beings in it. Itsuki and Yuki both contacted him and told him what had happened: Haruhi had grown bored of the world they lived in and created a new world with the two of them being the only ones in it. Kyon was their last hope to regain the old world and so he did. He told Haruhi that he wanted to go back to their old world (and that the ponytail she wore one time had looked really good on her) and in the end kissed her before waking up in his bed in the regular world. Part of him hoped it had all been a dream.
The next day he arrived at school, glad to find everything back to normal. That day, Haruhi had forced her short hair into a ponytail.
Abilities/Additional Notes: None whatsoever! Kyon is known in the show for being the normal guy and this is true, he's completely human with no sort of special powers except for the fact that he tends to have long metal monologues.
Sample Journal Post: [ The feed opens on Kyon and he holds up his hands. ]
Listen, I have a public service announcement to make. I heard Haruhi has once again taken up the ridiculous task of forming a club with no purpose in this place. Whatever happens, don't let yourself be dragged into this. You'll most likely be forced to participate in strange activities without goal, be dressed up like a maid - although I wouldn't mind seeing that - or have your dignity trampled upon until it's completely gone.
[ He sighs. ] I can know. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. ... Not personal experience on the maid thing though, obviously.
So I repeat, do not involve yourself with this club in any way or form--
[ There's the sound of a door being smacked open loudly, causing Kyon to stop in the middle of his sentence and look away from the camera to the door opening. Haruhi's voice can be heard as she yells something. ]
W-wait, no, it's not like that! I was just educating the masses about something important!
[ There's a thud and the camera falls off the place it was standing on, now only giving a nice view of the floor. ]
Don't do that--! Haruhi, let me go-- I'm choking!
[ There are continued sounds of a struggle until the feed times out and cuts off. ]
Sample RP: It was a fairly normal afternoon in the SOS Brigade's clubroom. This was most likely due to the fact that Haruhi was on cleaning up duty today, meaning she wasn't in the clubroom just yet to drag all of them in a more or less ridiculous activity.
But since just sitting around in the room and doing nothing was much too boring as well Kyon had taken out the Othello board and was playing a game with the only other male in the club, Itsuki Koizumi. Even though Kyon felt grateful to be able to distract himself from boredom with the game, the small typical smiles Itsuki kept sending him from the other side of the board were a bit unsettling to say the least. Kyon did suppose it was a good way to intimidate the opponent though - he was sure any normal man who wasn't familiar with Itsuki had abandoned the game long ago by now. Kyon wryly thought that at least the fact that they were playing a game meant that there had to be a board inbetween them, forcing the other guy out of his personal space for the duration of the game.
He put down a black piece and flipped over some white ones as his gaze wandered through the room.
Down by the window was the ever unmoving figure of Yuki Nagato, reading another thick and boring-looking book. Doubtless science fiction again, Kyon figured even though he couldn't read the title from where he was sitting. The girl hadn't moved during the hour they had already been sitting around in the room and Kyon doubted she ever would; mutant clowns could take over the building and she probably still would sit there right by the window reading. He did have to admit that she looked much better without her glasses.
On the other side of the room was Mikuru, adorably fumbling around with the teacups. Ah, she was just as cute as usual today, the shining beam of hope for this dusty and boring clubroom. She walked over to bring him and Itsuki some tea (not to mention that he got an unasked view of her cleavage when she bent over to pour it, causing the only thought to enter his mind to be 'supersize me') before trotting back to fumble around with the cups some more.
"It's your turn, Kyon-kun," the other male proclaimed with once again that tiny smile. Kyon, unknowing that he had dreamed off so much for a moment - he blamed Mikuru's chest - quickly looked back at the same and flipped over another piece to black.
As much as he wouldn't easily admit it out loud, he sort of liked the kind of life he had gotten. No, not exactly the whole aliens, time travellers and espers deal, but just hanging out with these people in the club room had become fun somewhere along the line. He even remembered his moments back in the closed space with Haruhi and the thought that had crossed his mind back then that he would never again return to this old world with these strange people and their weird antics..
And he remembered how sad he had actually felt at that thought.
Just as Kyon was about to berate himself for going over such a nostalgic cliché thought the door behind him was slammed open. He didn't even have to look over his shoulder to realise that the only person who would make that kind of entrance was Haruhi. She was shouting something enthusiastically - no doubt something about a new ridiculous plan she had involving them.
"Oh bother," he mumbled under his breath as the palm of his hand met his forehead.
