Eiko-san

I'm on my last day of work here in Tsukuba. One of the JAXA employees that I work with on each trip is a young woman named Eiko. She is the one who organizes all of the social events, makes sure that everyone has coffee or tea, etc. The fact that she is a skilled technical person doesn't seem that important to her bosses ( Read more... )

It is amazing how something so simple can be so profound. Sadly though your comment that her skill and knowledge falls secondary to her "social" skills in her boss' eyes makes me depressed. I would hope that a country so on the verge of massive upheaval would be working to change many of the societal beliefs that are directly responsible for the changes they are facing. Alas, it seems they are not. If you need any help with that BBQ let me know...

It's worse than that. The women who work in aerospace, maybe all technical or even all career work for all I know -- they're not married. Getting married and working a career is not just difficult like here, it's not done at all.
