It would be faster to walk to the T stop than to the Zipcar. Over thirty years ago I lived in Jamaica Plain, in a pretty borderline area economically. Based on that info alone, I would guess that you are not in a super posh area. And even then there was superior public transit compared to most of the US, so auto ownership was not manditory for access to urban and suburban life. I remember being able, through a combination of transit, to visit my friends who lived far out in the country in Boxborough MA, miles away from urban Boston
I used to live in north Dorchester, near JFK-U Mass (nee Columbia) station, and used the T or buses for everything when i lived there, without problem. All i needed could be had in Boston, Cambridge, or Brookline, and what i needed was easily carryable. People in Boston used to look at me funny for going through the T with a 20lb bag of cat food on my shoulder, as people there generally don't carry as many things on public transit as we in DC do for some inexplicable-to-me reason.
*nod* Yeah. Deirdre and I did our shopping at Costco the other day, and just took a suitcase with us. Packed all the food into that, and headed home. :-)
