the absolute best thing you can do is get a honda civic/accord or an acura. they retain their value better than anything on the market and have less problems/maintenance than anything else. then there's the outstanding gas mileage to boot.

fuck getting a car for peen. get something that's actually worth the money.

I peronally like Pontiacs. Started out with a Sunfire and went to a GTO(now).. learned how to drive on a Boneville/Grand Prix and really enjoy 'em all for the most part. Though the Vibe is kinda weird lol.

Don't know what your target price range is or whether you're buying new or used, so a bit hard to recommend.

For a starter car though I'd really go for Japanese, I'd probably go for the Mazda3. But ... Hondas & Toyotas probably give you more money back when you sell, and if you don't plan to sell they'll last forever - back in Uni I had a 12-year old Civic that lasted me 2 years with no problems at all (despite 0 oil changes, 0 services, and I lived in Buffalo so fairly extreme winters).

European cars tend to be more expensive. I do like the new Mini, but then again Americans don't like small cars :D

For American ... hmmm, to be honest the Focus would be the only American car I'd consider buying.
