I don't think we ever do find out what happened to Yuugi's parents.
Now, if you really want the complex story of Ryou and Bakura, you need the manga. They get shoved aside, just a bit, in the anime, in favor of Yuugi and Seto.
I think you're right about the way Jou and Honda whale on each other. I think that's a separate category of in-group violence. That's more what I see in Digimon 01, between Taichi and Yamato. The scuffle as a mode of communication, when words don't seem to be working. I think it works for some of the same reasons--because only someone who is in the same in-group would be allowed to do something like that--but it isn't disciplinary. And that, in turn, is separate from the fight-between-rivals, which I think also serves as a form of communication, but in a different way
