I have been, in my day, in the middle of a brouhaha. You can find about it if you click the 'inadvertant shitstorm' link in my tags ( Read more... )

Playing the racism card is really stupid when it isn't warranted. Usually the people who do it are just ignorant themselves. My boyfriend had it pulled on him when he told some kids in middle school to stop picking on their autistic classmate, but they were so ignorant that they didn't even know the right term for it. I think they called him "a racial".

Because you're the authority on what does or doesn't warrant 'the race card'? Do I even detect a hint of 'they're the REAL racists' nestled in there somewhere?

Only people who are blind to their privilege use the term 'race card'.

Fine, I consider myself an authority on stupidity, Then what would you call it then. "You told me to move to the back of the bus, you're a RACIST". That's if someone told me that I was being a bitch and I called them sexist. No, it's being a dumbass.

Yeah, that was a kind of crazy week, and is why most of my stuff went friends-only. I just had issues dealing with a lot of stuff afterwards.

I have to say I feel for that man on the bus, because to react in that way suggests that he has far too much experience with dreadful treatment on account of his race. You don't immediately jump to thinking something is about your race unless it has often been about your race in the past.

I understand that it can be hard when you're on the receiving end of the backlash. But I think it's even harder not being a white, straight male.

Pretty much this. It sucks when you've been caught making a misstep or got misconstrued or said something ignorant. But man, walk two moons in his shoes and you might see why his fuse is short or he went right to that conclusion.

But being calm and reasoning is HARD!

I'm flashing on the bit in Good Omens where Crowley does evil just by causing massive inconvenience, when he could do something grander then messing up London's cell phone network but he knows if he gets enough people pissed off, they'll be ugly to people for the rest of the day and maybe longer and do all the work of causing anger. Of course, choosing my Good Omens icon may have prompted that, too (I wanted something asplodey).

Now a more thought-out (I hope) response...

I can too easily fall into the trap of thinking "No matter what I do, someone's going to act unfairly about it." I'm not proud of it, especially since I haven't really run into THAT much ill treatment, certainly not compared to a lot of people. I try to notice when I start to expect someone to immediately get mad, to not be reasonable. Can make me feel self-righteous: I'm right, but that person's never going to acknowledge it and is only going to be unfair. It's a short circuit, and unfair in its own right. And I want, ultimately, to be fair.

There's a lot of weight to ill-treatment. It wears on all sorts of people. And assuming you'll be treated badly is asking for trouble, and noticing too much of the bad treatment and not enough of the good treatment, which does happen.

You've given me stuff worth thinking about. As well as something that gets a vote.

I'm in comedy. Before we go on stage, those of us in the place I perform spend about fifteen minutes saying every awful, racist, sexist, homophobic, transgressive thing we possibly can. Its not unlike what you hear about in "The Aristocrats" movies. We're of every gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation you can imagine. Almost all of us vote liberal, but we welcome our conservative brothers and sisters in comedy to cut loose, too ( ... )
