Read-a-thon Redux

Apr 08, 2011 17:33

The semi-annual Dewey's Read-a-Thon takes place tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to an uninterrupted day of reading. This time, I'm raising money for the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance, so I've set up a "reading" blog that I may continue to use for non-fandom things (ie: times when I need to keep my words apart). If you want to ( Read more... )

Hello! I'd wondered where you'd gotten to!
I just got through a hellish period at work myself, and someone was fired today.
Last week I finally read The Fountainhead, that's my literary accomplishment.

March was the worst - the workload has been insane and things have been pretty uncertain with the company in general - we laid off most of production for a longer than usual period, as we we're only building one show next season. More staff would probably go if it wouldn't cripple us beyond recovery. But we got good news today, so hopefully April will be better!

I read Atlas Shrugged and that was enough of Ms. Rand for me. I don't have any literary aspirations for the reading list, though I did pick up an Ian McEwan novel at the bookstore yesterday.

I don't plan on reading any more Rand, but I'm glad I read one. I like Ian McEwan's books, or rather the two I've read. I'm glad you got good news on the work front!

I think I did a read-a-thon already this week, staying up until 5:30 in the morning marking exams!

But now I am going to indulge myself in reading lots and lots and lots of fun things tomorrow. I will think of you doing the same thing! :-)

What do you mean, cat-loving Wilson, BTW?

That's definitely a read-a-thon! There's nothing better than indulging in a day of reading (which is why my guilt reflex kicked in).

Wilson adopted a diabetic cat that belonged to a neighbour that passed away, much to House's disgust. It was probably motivated more by duty and guilt than cat-love, but I'll believe whatever makes me happy at this point :)

Thanks for the link. A reading day is a good day in my book. After 20 years, I'm getting around to rereading all of Jane Austen. Which is a little bit of heaven.

What's to inspire? Dreck and more dreck?

Jane Austen sounds like an awesome idea - maybe I'll throw Emma into the mix.

I've enjoyed some aspects of this season, but the characterization has felt really inconsistent - I don't even recognize Wilson sometimes.

This is from AVClub:

(Fed up with these monkeyshines, Robert Sean Leonard, in keeping with the show's recent redefinition of Wilson as a groggy-looking pain-in-the-ass scold whose every appearance is met with depressed sighs from the viewers at home, complained, "You're a lot of things, House, but you've never been a sadist." He must have been watching some other show all this time.)

Hope you get around to some Austen someday!

Good to hear from you. I bear gifts! During my fic research I came across Colorado College Library's collection of menus. They have three for the Colorado Springs Caledonian Society, beginning with their first Burns banquet: 1898, 1911, and 1940. When I saw them they reminded me of your HW fics, and thought you might enjoy perusing.

Happy reading this Saturday!

Those are awesome - thank you! I particularly like the menu for 1898 :D

I started a Burns story this year, but didn't get very far. Hopefully I'll finish the story it morphed into soon, now that things are a bit quieter on the work front...
