Prompt time!
This came from a group I belong to over on DreamWidth; the challenge is to pic one of the prompts from McSweeney's Internet Tendency. I chose the first one.

The words come out all wrong, supposedly. They are a twisted combination of words, time, right and wrong, gleaming like newly made barbed wire in the sharp winter sun. But for all that they are being heard, they might as well be the plastic jewels of childhood, all red and blue and shaped like stars and hearts.
It was so much easier when hearts were only something to Bedazzle onto your backpack full of Twinkies.
Another strand of something dull and painful weaves itself into the jumble of spikey words, this one covered with a thick coat of rust to show it's age. Older isn't wiser in this case, only more tired.
Eventually the wires and the words, the rust and the jewels become so thoroughly knotted that the only obvious choice is to walk away and buy a new strand.
Perhaps Christmas lights this time.
