What does kale taste like?
I got some in my organic food box this week and wasn't sure what to do with it (well, actually, I threw it out because I forget it was coming and let it and the strawberries bake in the heat for two days before remembering about it, but that's beside the point).
Normally I think of it as pretty mild flavored and the difference is more that its leaves are thicker and more robust than spinach. It takes a little chewing, but if you cut off the center thick stem, it's not too bad. Then I went and tasted the two kinds of kale we had in our fridge. One version (from Trader Joe's and marketted as "for cooking") tasted like a very very mild broccoli or cabbage with a slight aftertaste of nuttiness. The other one was ostensibly baby kale and came in a huge costco bag called "power greens" tasted instantly nutty (maybe a mild nut like a cross between walnuts and cashews) and it had a slight aftertaste of greeness. Actually, adult kale isn't even as as strongly flavored as adult spinach
