Mercer grins back with uncharacteristic laziness and swings his arms up above his head, leaving a pair of smooth arcs in the sand. Neatly, he folds his hands behind his head.
"What," he asks, propping up his feet, "I can't take a second and chill out when I come home?"
"Shhhhh." He winks. "Don't tell anybody. If I don't keep up my reputation, Dad's gonna be pissed.
"This," he continues, lifting an arm to sweep it wide across the sky, "is Kokkos, the island everybody knows and nobody cares about. Last time I was here was, oh, man, something like nineteen twenty-six. I can't take it for too long, but a couple hours every fifty years or so?"
He tucks his hand back behind his head and watches the sky.
