In which I rant about fandom

Feb 16, 2008 22:20

So yesterday, dementedsiren forwarded me this link to an entry over at the journal of a writer called iibnf. It discussed the potential motivations of rape fic in fandom. It was a well written, well reasoned piece one the subject, and I espically liked it's not something that gets discussed about in fandom very frequently. Rape fic is coyly referred to as "non-con ( Read more... )

Truthfully I'm not sure why you're so sure you'd get flamed for this. Granted, it's not written in an overly conciliatory, backasswards tone, but it's also right in line with the topic and very specific to the question imbedded in her post. It's also not out of line with the majority of the responses there. Of course there will be people trying to defend rapefic, becase it's an oft use fandom genre that people do enjoy, mainly becaue they filter out all the negative connotations so that the sex can be enjoyed - that being the whole problem with the thing to begin with. That said, the people who frequent iibnf's journal are generally intelligent people, and her journal isn't terribly naive when it comes to sexstuff.

Mostly I'm betting on flaming simply because I've been around the fandom block long enough to know that 1) If you broadly attack a widely read fandom genre/ship/convention/whatever you're generally asking for trouble, 2) I noted that the conversation had stayed mostly in the realm of the theortical, and I'm breaching fandom protocol by bringing in the real world, as opposed to staying within the bounds of fandom and 3)My post was rather... different in tone from many of the comments I read.

That said, your comments on her reader's general intelligence are a bit of a relief. We'll just see where this goes. However, I did feel really, really good about writing it, which is why I reposted it here. I smell a possible essay for a publication I've been working on forming in the back of my mind...

Finally, I love your icon. From where does it come?

Icon is a quote from Gray's Anatomy done my tmg_icons if my description field is accurate.

Yeah, you're right about the tone beging different. But someone always brings up RL scenarious in any fandom discussion involving rape/assault, so it might as well be your comment, which is intelligent, not overly emotional, and actually to the topic.

Did you a rant? Sure. But it's an inherently rant-worthy topic, so I'm not sure it's entirely inappropriate there...

*grin* You always know how to make me feel better. And I do. I'm much less worried about putting that out there. I generally try to avoid potential wank, so I was basically being worried because of that.

And now, my kitty overlords tell me that it is time for bed. G'night!

I think your comment was entirely within the context of the discussion. Impassioned, yes. But there are just those sorts out the world, aren't there. The impassioned people, that is. And only for so long as it takes to eliminate them. Not that such a policy would ever be enacted. (Soylent Green)

I'm still organizing my thoughts to respond to iibnf's comment on my comment, and you've given me more upon which to meditate.
