'Think Of The Children' - Enough Of This Bullshittery!

Jun 12, 2011 14:23

It's been a long time since I entered a post on this journal. Life really has been flinging me around in new directions, and, as a result of my absence, I'm more than certain some of you will have suspected that I'd left this to whither on the dust-ridden shelf of the internet. But there's always one thing that's guaranteed to haul me back here - ( Read more... )

I loathe the 'Won't somebody think of the children' whine! There is this bizarre idea that kids operate in this state of perpetual innocence, that is ruined by seeing Things(tm).

I don't think seeing people in healthy relationships is a huge problem. I don't think kids need to see graphic sex and violence, I don't think kids need to hear bad language, but I fail to see any problems with two people, who care very much about each other having a wee cuddle in bed.

Love is not the same as sex, and sex is not the same as love. Why is it hard to explain love? Or that love sometimes leads to sex? ARGH!

Want a happy note? My redneck, backwoods, fairly bigoted, ought-to-have-been-my-brother (my mom and his mom were best friends) came home the other day and told his mother he'd signed a petition calling for their senator to support the legalization of same-sex marriage in the state I grew up in. I cannot express how happy and proud this makes me.

The children don't have a problem with it. It's their parents that have the problem. But not all of them, not any more.

it's time that the parents grow up and stopping hiding behind the not 'my' child trope. by time the average child is out of diapers they have seen enough murders rapes and other acts of mayhem to give me nightmares for years but spare the tykes the sight of two consulting adults topless in bed.
i have friends that i shake my head at when they whined about jack/ianto and their 'gay agenda' but utter not a word when other sci fi shows have hetro couples going at hot and heavy.

Thank you for saying this
someone needed to and no matter how hard i tried i can never quite get the words right
i have a lovely little god brother who i adore and who i regularly babysit. AS there was nothing good on tv on sunday night i took my torchwood dvds and watched "Kiss kiss bang bang" Tom walked in just as john and jack were kissing in the bar.
his immediate response "EWWWWW!"
when i asked him why he said "Cos they're both boys..."
"But why is that a problem - they love each other, just like mum and dad."
he thought about it and thought and finally decided that, actually that was ok.
like you said it is amazing how children do not judge
however what worries me is that children copy their parents and if parents say "ew" they say "ew" hopefully one day, that will change

ok rant over, but thank you for posting this
