So do I. I can't even tell you how many books I've discovered just by browsing through and having a cover catch my eye. Plus, as much as I love my computer, the digital experience just can't compare, IMHO.
That's horrorific. Why would they do that? What about the smell of paper when you open a book, closing it with a satisfied sigh and a bit of sadness when you're done? The sense memory of touching a book. Gah!
Apparently they think that books are obsolete and need to be taken over by the latest technology. I knew people like that in library school. (My "non-book" class professor was actually pretty anti-book. Odd for an older librarian, I would think, but...) I love my computer, but I would never, ever want to give up reading from a book. As you said, it engages the senses so much more. Sigh...
That's horrible. o.O And they're building a coffee shop but only *18* readers? They really DON'T believe in their digital library or reading at all, no matter what they say. That's really scary. o.o
I know! So horrible... I was really hoping the 18 readers was a typo, because I don't know how on earth that can even be partially adequate. I guess they are assuming most of the students will be bringing in laptops? And it's funny, but in library school, coffee shops/eating areas were a huge thing for customer service, because patrons (especially students) really wanted them. I just hope that there isn't a rush of other schools/libraries to do this.
