i was knitting with a friend today and she mentioned a pair of socks she made for a mutual friend. in them, she knitted a few lines from nerudas "ode to my socks" and i read it tonight, and it struck me. i especially love the end, the part about using what is beautiful even if it eventually means its destruction, change, or loss. it's something i ( Read more... )

God love Neruda. When I was a college freshman, I was reading his book of odes as I stood in line to offer a pint of blood after 9/11. One particularly poignant moment: I was reading "Ode to the Atom" while the heavy-bicepped man behind me talked about how it was our duty to get them back. I was so mad and scared, my face turned red, and I just kept reading about the atom, about how the same thing that made up our bodies has killed millions of people, and I thought about how not much has changed in the past 50 years.

yeah, it was such a weird time, so much anger on everyone's part. and here was this moment that was bringing people together only to emphasize their differences later. neruda would have been awed by your story, i think.
