the reason the Faith has always declared divination to be sinful (replace 'sinful' in this instance with the word 'unwise') is that it claims to give to man those powers which can never be his and which if man had his life would become utterly meaningless.
I was into that stuff in a big way when I was a teenager. But think about it - if you can interpret signs then why aren't you the prophet of the age? Why isn't everyone a prophet of God?
No... to wish to know those things not meant for us is to wish for death - for the very essence of life is not God's Holy Wisdom but Man's Adventurous Ignorance - an ignorance which seeks God alone, and not the powers belonging to God.
this feels to me like you're concerned that i'm lost, divining truths out of potentially heretical texts. i appreciate that you care about me, and yet i have no faith in the i ching (or any other religious text) as a final say on truth.
i interpret just as much from the rain and the tulips as i do from the words of others, and embrace my ignorance which seeks self-knoweldge and freedom. it's all open to interpretation, even the most articulate of words will find its own meaning in the individual mind of the person who hears it. i only ask that your recognize that in yourself as well -- you've made a life of meaning for yourself by living through and by a book that lends itself to equal amounts of interpretation and bibliomancy.
maybe i'm wrong, but this felt condescending to me, and i that's hurtful because i felt judged on a criteria that was less about me and more about some fear or inherited belief. you know me too well, and you like me too much, i hope.
think about it - why on earth would I be interested in judging you or being condescending to you? That's not going to happen. You simply have to trust that as being a fact on which I give you my word. Hence I can't in honesty apologise for something I didn't do. You are a person I love, that is the foundation
( ... )
ah, dave, i think you are a very generous and beautiful man. i don't really want to engage in a theological debate, so let's just be happy for each other's decisions and trust that we are both doing what our hearts think is best.
