I'm very fond of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - I make a point of trying to watch it every Tuesday. But tonight's - sheesh, heavy-handed enough?
First off, we see the body formally known as Grant Ward dressed up as if he's Neo from The Matrix. Not only that, but the part where he kills the majority of the board at Transia looks like Neo overwriting the Matrix as well. And let's not forget the EuroTrash accent that they had him use for most of the episode. Is this the only way we know how to make him seem villainous enough?
And let's not forget May and Andrew's touching scene near the end. I mean that literally - they're trying to touch their hands through the pod's glass as if May was Kirk and Andrew was Spock.
I make this show part of my must watch TV, and I get that it's not always the best entertainment. But the tropes were over the top this week, and they weren't even good homages to the original source material. We get that Hive is the new Big Bad, and that he's fighting to make our world an Inhuman reality. He's still not Neo. And while May and Andrew might have been in love, there's been nothing on-screen to indicate that they had anything near the epic (b)romance that Kirk and Spock did.
I would have just rolled my eyes at the Neo references and left it at that, if they didn't also ham-handily added in the Wrath of Khan scene as well. Did the writers just forget how to write this week?
