The weather service has issued a warning about a big dump of snow we're due for. I live above the snow line . . . . I have no problem taking the day off due to snow, but my problem lies in the fact that one of the probation officers lives in the same street, and if she shows up at work and I don't (or vice versa) the 'snow' excuse wears a bit thin ( Read more... )

Regarding the bike -- you could get an exercise bike. They're far more expensive, obviously, but you have the benefit of avoiding Dunedin's hills and being able to use it whenever you please (which is a benefit over the gym). You can also put it up in front of the television so you can watch that while you work out without feeling self-conscious. I'm pretty sure that's my next purchase, although my Japan airfares might delay it a tad...

As for swine flu, basically you just need to be as hygienic as possible and encourage it in others around you. That's the most effective way to stop yourself from getting it. Tamiflu is useful only when you've got the symptoms, and even then you have to use it fast and early and it's only going to work as long as the course. You could buy one for a backup, but you'll need a script and it will cost you about seventy-five dollars. I could possibly get it a tad cheaper, but my boss will realise who you are via the script, as I can't sell it without one...

I have an exercycle. It bores me. It sat in my bedroom at my flat for a good couple of years acting as a clothes horse. TV doesn't distract me because TV is boring too. Hehehe.

::sighs:: I'm going to get sick with the Swine Flu and be NZ's first swine flu fatality. My legacy will be to be a statistic. I just really don't want to have to recover from *any* kind of flu at the moment - I don't think my body is up to it!

Although, from what I hear, the swine flu doesn't necessarily have to be life threatening, it's just a really bad version of the normal flu

From the literature I have received at work and the things I have found online, H1N1/swine flu is actually a relatively mild form of the flu.  It's upper-respiratory versus the far more fatal lower-respiratory H5N1/avian influenza.  Most of the deaths I am aware of are linked with pre-existing heart or respiratory problems or other underlying conditions.  For my hospital at least, it has been no more problem than the usual seasonal influenza strains.

Of course, we had the benefit of it hitting at the tail end of the flu season.  Things might be worse where you are seeing as how you guys are going through the middle of winter.  I would second what claireoujisama said about hygiene - washing hands really is one of the best things you can do for your health.
