Edit to add: Poor Christchurch just keeps on getting thumped - they tried to turn the power back on in the central city. Unfortunately a gas main had broken and a spark set the building on fire - and there was no water pressure. (They're showing live pictures ( Read more... )

If it makes you feel any better, I think the chances of a big earthquake in Dunedin are slim. I mean, I've felt a bugger of one there myself in 2003, but it was centred in Fiordland, and everyone's bound to feel a big earthquake up to hundreds of kilometres away. Christers is actually pretty close to the Alpine fault, after all; if you look at the faultlines, Dunedin's not really on them. Which isn't to say shit don't happen, but you're probably pretty safe where you are.

...you know, I always thought Wellington would go first. Although with that said, seismologists are apparently saying they don't think this is our big one.

It does make me feel better. What makes me feel even more betterer (apart from my emergency kit) is the fact that if you look at those maps on geonet that shows you the location of all the earthquakes in NZ over the past 10 years, the area around Dunedin is pretty much earthquake free. Yay!

And with the Christchurch one, they're now wondering if it took place in a fault they weren't previously aware of!

I JUST DON'T WANT TO GO SLIDING DOWN MY HIIIIILL!!

(Kinda sucks that the weather forecast for tonight in Christchurch is really really cold!)

I'm hungry! ::smiles brightly::

::contemplates going to get chinese::

Our weather right now is incredibly shite -- we've got some of our driving horizontal rain going on. But I'd have that and worse, if it meant Christers didn't have to suffer it. <3
