A tall man with brown hair has suddenly appeared on one of the bridges spanning between the halves of the city- which was curious, considering that he'd just been sitting by a crappy motel pool with Beckett after his close call with the Triple Killer.

I've never been to Kansas, so I couldn't tell.

I haven't been to Kansas either. [Pause while B nibbles at the tip of his thumb, as if thinking hard about something.] You can't be somewhere anymore if you were never there in the first place.

[Castle smirks a little at that.]

True enough. I was mostly quoting something to covey how... lost I am.

You would probably find help more forthcoming if you were a little more upfront about your troubles.

Well, being a smartass about stuff is my usual response to things.

Touche. Next time I find myself in a strange place where I don't know anybody, I'll tone down the jackass and turn on my inner investigator instead.

"Investigator" is not a mode than can be turned on and off as if flipping a switch. [He stares, deadly serious, and leans in a little bit, as if imparting a great secret.] It's a way of life.

[Castle can actually appreciate that remark- it sounds like something Beckett might say. Or close to it, anyway.]

Well, I started off as a writer, so it's not my main profession. I just help the police.

Really? What did you write?

[Castle blinks, then reminds himself that it's entirely possible that there are people who have never heard of him.]

Mysteries. Crime fiction. That sort of thing. I started working for the police department after someone based their crimes on the fictional ones I wrote.

What a horrible way to become involved with the law.

[Castle's face darkens at that. At first, he would have just blown this off with a joke and snide remark, but after what he'd just been through... not to mention the incident with the serial killer who was an obsessive fan...]

Not the best way, no. But I've learned a lot and helped bring criminals to justice, too.

No doubt you've earned the thanks of your local law enforcement as well.

Definitely. [He smirks a little.] My partner did take a while to warm to me, though. But somewhere along the way, we just... clicked and trusted each other.
