He hears Harry's footsteps coming from around the corner, but in the wary, instinctive threat-assessment mode cultivated by three hundred years of trying to evade Azazel's detection, he misjudges the distance of the approaching person from the wall. Instead of stepping around the corner and walking slowly past Harry, he steps out and nearly collides with him. Thankfully, he may have avoided knocking them both off-balance through his quick reflexes - he doesn't hesitate to reach out to steady the boy.*

[Harry's immediate response is verbal rather than "oh snap gotta move," and he'll gladly blame the slight falter on how full he is from lunch. But thanks to the man's own quick reflexes, he doesn't fall over. His hand is at his wand, but he hasn't pulled it out from where he's keeping it in his robes. Oh. This guy seems alright.]
