The snarky consumerist, #3: Bootin' up

Nov 06, 2005 12:20

There is a clear division in my mind between play boots and daily boots. The bar for play boots is lower and different than for daily boots. Boots I wanna spend winter in have to be comfortable, with a wide toe box, soft leather, lower heel. They gotta put up with rain, cold, lots of wear. They gotta work with jeans and with skirts. They gotta be ( Read more... )

I found some Hush Puppies (last year's line, I think) that are just below the knee, zip-up, waterproof, Thermalite-lined, flat-heeled, great fit, rounded toe. Doubt you'd need the Thermalite for the same kind of warmth as I do, but I gather that the whole idea with Thermalite is that they're as warm as you need them to be. Will go well with jeans (which can be tucked in or worn overtop) and probably with longer skirts (*maybe* shorter skirts too, depending on the style -- these aren't delicate boots). They are motorcycle-style inspired (decorative buckles around the back at mid-calf and ankle). I can't find them online to save my life and don't know what the model name is, so here's a photo instead.

Yeah, when I was on the hunt earlier this season for brown boots I *almost* bought these (in brown), except I figured, cute as they were (and they were DAMNED cute), they wouldn't last more than a season, and they were $250 CA, which was more than I was willing to spend for a one-season boot. Also, it just makes me cringe when suede gets scuffy. Also, the salesguy was talking about how everyone was buying them, which meant that, well, everyone would be wearing them, and they were recognizable enough that that would bug me.

The other ones I almost bought were also Sartos, but they were too close to my other Sartos, and I figured I'd rather get something different.

Ooo, boots. I know too well the drama they involve. For everyday boots, I've been going after ankle-height black boots for more than a decade. Three years ago, I found my utterly perfect pair in Australia, from Josef Seibel. Which I can never find here. I have worn my beloved boots to shreds. So, when we went back to Australia last December for a visit, the number one priority on my list was find another pair of my boots. I eagerly bounded into the shop in Melbourne where I bought them, thinking that this time, I'd load up and get two or three pairs. Only to find ... they weren't stocking my boots for the season! because of course, December is summer there, and no one sane is buying black boots in summer ...

Sob sob. This year I suppose I finally gotta replace my poor bedraggled boots. With what, I know not.

Try to find Beautifeel. They are great. Also, Nordstrom's sells J. Siebel.

Zappos.com is a good bet on the internet, if you know your sizing and model: http://www.zappos.com/n/br/b/438.html
