Mariemaia had read that two things were inevitable in life; death and taxes. Being only a teenager, taxes didn't interfere much in her life. However homework certainly did.
"There are two things in life that are inevitable," she whispered, "Death and homework."
Her two stuffed teddy bears stared at her blankly. They had never been interesting conversationalists. Mariemaia was very polite, she thought, for tolerating their company for long. Even though she was nearly fifteen.
"Time for bed," Lady Une said, outside of her door. "Can I come in?"
For two brief nanoseconds Mariemaia wondered what would happen if she said no. She was still shuddering when she yelled out an affirmative.
Lady Une entered the room, her pace still reflecting the many years she had spent in the military. Lady Une's gaze flickered to the teddy bears. "Do you remember when you got Miss R and Dragon?"
"Of course I do," Mariemaia said, rolling her eyes and turning around to face Lady Une. "I'm not a baby."
"No, you're not," Lady Une said. She always managed to say things like that they were especially important. The mundane, the ordinary, Lady Une could make things sound special, even when they were not. "Tell me, then."
"I - " Mariemaia struggled to find the words. "I saw Dragon at the hospital gift shop," she mumbled, "After physical therapy."
"And what about Miss R?" Lady Une said quietly.
"She was a present. For Christmas. One year after, after I came to live with you," Mariemaia said quietly.
"Yes she was. Something about her seemed special, just like you," Lady Une murmured.
Mariemaia smiled shakily.

It still left homework to be done in the morning however. Mariemaia was wondering how she could get out of it on the drive to school. It was not like she had deliberately left it until the last minute, she reasoned, it was just that it had been at the end of the list she needed to get done.
Jumping out of the car with a quick goodbye to the driver, Mariemaia made her way slowly to the school's entrance. Her bullet wounds sometimes hurt in cold weather and the icy wind cut through her school uniform.
Joshua was waiting at the entrance to the school, an impatient look on his face. "Finally! You're here, quickly tell me the answers to the math problems that were set last night!"
"I didn't do them either," Mariemaia said.
"You didn't?" He said, recoiling. "But you always do your homework! Oh god," he whispered, staring around at the the snow which had just started to fall. "Hell is freezing over and I am not beingraptured."
Mariemaia gave him an amused look. "What ever happened to being agnostic?"
"Too much effort and worrying," Joshua said, waving away the question. "I'm Buddhist now."
"That means no meat, I hope you realise," Mariemaia murmured.
Joshua visibly wavered. "Oh. Well, one must sacrifice for one's faith right? This shall be my sacrifice!" He declared flamboyantly.
She giggled and Joshua gave her a hurt pout.
"I'm not laughing at you, Josh," Mariemaia mumbled between giggles, "I'm laughing with you!"
"Yes," Joshua said carefully, giving her his best I-can't-believe-I'm-friends-with-this-madwoman stare. "It still leaves the awful homework problem."
"Oh, that," Mariemaia said, playing with the hem of her skirt.

"My math teacher gave Joshua a detention but not me," Mariemaia said to Wufei. "Josh thinks it's unfair, but it's the first time I've forgotten, so..."
"Shouldn't you be finishing off the homework now?" Wufei asked, nose buried deep in his reports. Mariemaia knew however that he treasured their conversations. Apparently her presence to him was soothing. She felt rather pleased after hearing that. And LadyUne said eavesdropping was bad. But Mariemaia thought there could be benefits.
"I will," she promised, "I just wanted to talk to for a little while. You're always so busy."
"I have work to do," he said.
"There's always work to do," Mariemaia stated. "Shouldn't someone else do it for you sometimes?"
"I know if I do it, it will be to my standards," Wufei murmured.
"Hmm," Mariemaia considered.
"So... this Joshua," Wufei said. "Is he a close friend of yours?"
"Well yeah," Mariemaia gave Wufei a funny look. "We have been friends since I was in single digits! I've talked about him hundreds of times to you!"
"Do you have any girl friends?" Wufei said delicately. Or tried to anyway.
"Um. I sit next to Sanni in English," Mariemaia said slowly. "And Aisha sometimes joins Josh and I at lunch. But that's only because she likes Josh." Mariemaia giggled, "It's funny because Josh doesn't even realise that she likes him. He can be so dense sometimes!"

"How was detention?" Mariemaia said as soon as she saw Josh the next day.
He gave her a foul look. "Obviously too plebeian for one as high as you."
"Obviously," she repeated. "Did you get the homework done then?"
"Eventually," he groaned, "Had to miss half of the Roger Mikhail special that they had on TV7."
"I taped it," Mariemaia said, "Want a copy?"
"Yes, please, oh marvelous Mariemaia!" He cried out, bending on her knees to worship. Mariemaia giggled nervously as a couple other students gave them weird looks.
"Okay, okay! You can come around this afternoon, right?" Mariemaia asked, holding out a hand. He took it and flashed her a bright smile.

"Miss R! Dragon!" Joshua cried out as soon as he entered he room. "It has been too long!"
Mariemaia flushed. "I know they're babyish but - "
"Babyish? Who told you such untrue fabrications?" Josh asked. "They're Miss R and Dragon! Mighty defenders of Mariemaia!"
"They're teddy bears," Mariemaia said awkwardly. "Aren't I a little old for them?"
"Of course not! You're never too old for anything!" Josh nodded and then frowned, "Well, unless you grow too big for them. Gah, I hate it how I can't play on playgrounds anymore with banging my head, or bumping my knee," Josh griped.
"I guess so," Mariemaia said doubtfully.
"They're not just stuffed animals, they're more than that! They imbued with memory, love and grape juice!" Joshua declared.
Mariemaia smiled and Josh pounced.
"See! See! You're smiling, and it's not a frown upside down because that would be weird but a genuine smile!" Josh grinned, and twirled her around. "You'll never be too big for Miss R and Dragon, okay? They're a part of you!"
"Just like your Transformers are a part of you?" Mariemaia asked.
"Yes and no. They are more than a mere part of me. What they are, extends past mere emotion and child bonds," Josh said tearfully asMariemaia grinned, feeling much happier.
"Okay," she said, "I guess you're right."
"Yes, of course," Josh said quickly before leaning closer, beckoning Mariemaia to come closer. "Now... you haven't, by by chance, started the Geography homework?"
