The Man with a Blue Guitar (1/?)

It all started with a dream.

No, it’s not Seo Joohyun’s dream. It is someone else’s dream, specifically her hyper and always a failure Cupid best friend Kim Hyoyeon. How many boys in Seoul University had Hyoyeon tried to match up with her but failed miserably?

“Seohyun, what the hell is wrong with you?! Are you a lesbian?”

That’s the common lines Hyoyeon would scream at her after her failed dates. Really, she doesn’t have to scream. She’s not deaf only picky…..aloof……stubborn. Whatever!

“I’m not interested Hyo unnie so cut it out.”

But Kim Hyoyeon never learns her lesson. Even if Seohyun always returns single from her disaster dates, Hyoeon never gives up. She still looks out for the “right man” for her. Yeah, right. Honestly, if Hyoyeon would just ask her she would say that she’s not interested and rather spend a whole day reading a book, surf the net while eating gogumas. Aaaaah, gogumas plus she can’t wait to go home tonight. A raw video of episode 7 of Heartstrings has already been uploaded on Youtube and she can’t wait to watch it again.

“Omona, Lee Shin is starting to like Gyu Won. So cute! Hehehheheh.” She thought.

She and Hyoyeon were lazing around the grassy lawns of Seoul University since their next class would be in three hours. So the two best friends decided to sit under the shade of a tree to kill the time.

Yah, Seo Joohyun are you listening?! Oh no no no! You’re not thinking of that teeny bopper drama again, are you?!”

“Unnie!” She whined. “It’s a youth melodrama and it’s set in a university campus where mature people rules. Plus, it’s a musical one.”

“And Lee Shin is really charismatic.” She murmured.

“HA! Lee Shin is just a character. So stop drooling for him and let’s find the “real man” for you!”

Seohyun rolled her eyes.

“And where is that “real man”, unnie?”

“Who knows, he could be here?”

Her unnie turned around exaggeratedly and points across the lawn only to find it empty except for a stray dog sniffing the ground.

“Oh, wow! What a hairy prince charming of mine.” Seohyun commented sarcastically.

It was a bright Monday morning. There are only a few people in the campus and some looked like they still need a few snores before coming to school. But for Seo Joohyun, Monday morning is a great way to start your week.

“Ah, what would be this week’s Heartstring epi-“

“HYUNNIE‼‼‼”

A piercing scream shattered her peaceful morning and she finds herself lying flat on the ground with a heavy boulder named Kim Hyoyeon on her stomach.

“Oomph! Unnie, I can’t breathe!” She gasped.

“Sorry!”

Hyoyoen scrambles up and helped Seohyun to stand up.

“Why are you screaming unnie?”

“Huh? Oh yeah..HYUNNIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE‼!”

“Waeyo?!”

“I’ve found HIM‼!

“Nuguyeo?”

“You’re SOULMATE‼‼”

Seohyun stared at her best friend.

“Ahahahahahhahahaha. Aigoo, what are you talking about Unnie? Soulmate? Chincha!”

“Really, Hyunnie. I’ve found your soulmate.”

Seohyun stopped laughing and stared at her unnie skeptically. Hyoyeon has this determined smile as if she really found her soul mate. It creep her out. So she cleared her throat and tried to distract her unnie.

“Unnie, have you studied for -“

Joohyun, I said I’ve found your soulmate.”

“N-neh?”

“Aren’t you curious where in the world I have found him and who he is?”

“No.” She really wants to say that but judging from her best friend’s wide eyes and hands on her hips posture, Hyoyeon is, well, five percent serious. So she opted to humor her.

“Erm..Fine. Where?”

“In my dreams!”

“BWOH?! You know what unnie, let’s stop this nonsense. What are you, a fortune teller? I’m leaving. I’m going to class now.”

Seohyun turned around and briskly walked away from her insane best friend.

“Really, soulmates? Tsk! As if!”

“Hyunnie!” Hyoyeon chased after her and tried to match her pace while going towards their classroom.

“I really saw your soul mate in my dreams.”

“Unnie, if he really is my soul mate then why he’s in your dream and not in mine?”

“I don’t know but I have a strong gut feeling about this dream and we have to do our best to make this happen.”

“We?! Oh no, I won’t participate in any of these craziness. I’m going to class now unnie. See you at lunch.”

Seo Joohyun practically sprinted to her classroom. She doesn’t want to hear any of her craziness. She was so happy to see the door of her classroom. She was so engrossed in her walking that she didn’t notice the person in front of her and crashed her face on his back.

“Ouch, my nose!”

She whimpered in pain and kept on holding her nose when she heard a husky voice near her.

“Omo! Miss, kwenchanayo?”

“Crap, it’s a boy! Pabo Joohyun!”

Still keeping her head low and her hand on her nose, she raised her left hand up and made a thumb up sign, indicating that she’s okay.

“Are you really sure?”

Seohyun nodded while still doing the thumb up sign. She’s mortified with her situation and it prevents her form raising her head to look at the guy.

“Erm..if you’re really okay, can I go? I still have a class….”

Face very red now, Seohyun made a gesture with her hands as if to say that the guy can go.

“Just go already!” She screamed mentally.

“Erm, I’ll go now.”

She continued to clutch her nose while listening to the guy’s fading footstep. When she’s sure that he’s far away, she raised her head. But the guy has already turned the around the corner at the end of the hall so she only caught a glimpse of him.

A man with a blue guitar.

“Say what?! You just did not say that you bumped your nose on someone else’s back?”

They are again at the school grounds, eating their lunch under the shade of a tree. Seohyun forced Hyoyeon to eat their lunch outside. She was extremely embarrassed about the incident that happened this morning. She’s afraid that she might cross paths with that faceless man. So to save herself for further embarrassment, she escaped to outside.

“Unnie, can you please lower down your voice? I get it, I was careless. Aigoo, I want to die!”

“That’s what you get for leaving me. I was still talking about your soulmate.”

Seohyun groaned. Not this topic again. She doesn’t a need soulmate. All she wants are her gogumas and Lee Shin.

“Hai, Lee Shin….” She sighed dreamily.

“Yah, quit fangirling over that pretty boy! You have a soulmate here, in Seoul University!”

“Aish! Who is that so-called soulmate anyway?!”

She’s really annoyed now. Might as well listen to Hyoyeon’s stupid dream and then move on.

“Well, as what I’ve said, I saw him in my dream. Not just him but also you. You were walking along this road when suddenly you bumped to someone-“

“Unnie, even in your dream I’m still careless?”

“Shut up. Anyways, you bumped into each other and then talked a bit. It’s a bit confusing really because the setting changed. The two of you are now in a park. You were sitting on this bench with this huge Christmas tree behind you-“

“Christmas tree? This is so cheesy.”

“Aish, shut up! Okay, where were we?”

“Park.” Seohyun replied glumly.

“Right! There was Christms tree behind you and the two of you were laughing. And you’re both wearing red! Aigoo. So cute! Anyways, there were children playing in front of you and then the guy suddenly strums his guitar.”

“Guitar?” She mentally asked. The incident that morning flashed before her. Could it be?

“I think he was singing a song to you because you looked really happy in my dream and then….”

“Then what?”

“The end!”

Seohyun rolled her eyes. Her unnie is such a dork. The incident this morning might just be a coincidence. There are a lot of people around the world who plays the guitar. It couldn’t be.

“And oh, that guy in my dream is holding a blue guitar!”

Her eyes widened.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

That’s her heart, beating erratically, her breath in a stitch. Her unnie’s dream can’t be true.

“Un-nie, are you sure it’s a blue guitar?”

“Of course, I’m quite sure!”

Bu but then, you don’t know him right? I mean it’s just a dream! He could just be a figment of your imagination.”

“Oh no, dear. He is REAL. In fact, he studies here in our university. And he has a name.”

“W-what?”

“Jung. Yong. Hwa. Music major, 2nd year just like me and speaking of the devil, he’s coming right here.”

“N-neh?”

Hyoyeon puckered her mouth and pointed someone behind her. Seohyun turned around and gasped. So the faceless man finally has a face. There, at a distance, Jung Yonghwa walks confidently towards them with a friendly smile.

It’s him, the man with the blue guitar.
