Knitted Bag #2

Finished another bag, this time not felted but made out of recycled Sari silk yarn.

This is what the yarn looks like. The colours are a bit off, but the texture is still quite obvious.

And a close up:

According to Hip Knits, where I got the yarn, it is hand spun from shredded sari remnants in Nepal. It is spun by the village women of Nepal, many of whom are Tibetan refugees or have been widowed, abandoned, or rescued from forced prostitution. The women have combined their traditional skills in this craft and have created an empowering cottage industry, that helps support their families.

I'd bought the yarn a while ago, because I couldn't resist the vibrant colours and the interesting texture of it but didn't have a specific project in mind, so once I got it I was quite unsure what to make with it. I thought about a scarf for a while, but the yarn is quite heavy and I didn't think I would like to wear it as a scarf. It's really hard-wearing, though, so I finally settled on making a bag with it.

The pattern is Knitty's Unbiased, which worked really well and I used just under 2 200g hanks of Sari Silk for the bag. The project took me 3.5 days from casting on to finishing all the seams, so that's not too bad going. And I LOVE the end result!!

The Bag!!

And me, wearing the bag:
