On Oct. 2, there was a meetup planned for the Cloisters Medieval Festival but it didn't pan out. However, people did show up for the Parked film at the Irish Film festival.
I was able to get to the Cloisters Medieval Festival (along with fellow Merlin fan,
samara2187, and my two daughters). The day was perfect, not too hot, not too cold, partly cloudy and dry.
There was tons to do, way too much to see in a single day with plays and dancing and storytelling. Lots of places to get food or spend money. It was pretty crowded but not so overwhelming that we couldn't find seats on the stands or have to wait in long lines for lunch.
And then there were the jousts. I had to laugh because first up was the ring-and-lance thing with the horses galloping and the knights trying to get their lances into the rings being held up by the squires - just like that tournament with Merlin in season 3. Poor Merlin.
Next up was the actual joust. Then lances were splintering against shields (balsa wood tips on the lances just like in Merlin) as the knights rode against each other in the tournament. Finally, there was a melee with swords and horses and it was just great fun to watch. It reminded me so much of what they do in Merlin. Made me smile.
We hung around after that to see Robin Hood and his band fight the Sheriff's henchmen and women. Lots of sword play, fists thrown and just general mayhem. Of course the gallant Robin won his fair Maid Marion. Well done, people.
After that, it was starting to get late. We had tickets for Parked and had planned to meet up with other
merlinnyc people at the theatre down on 8th street. Took the A train all the way down and started to walk toward the theatre just in time to get rained on (I felt bad for those still at the festival). I'm probably not listing them all but
smoo_nyc,
anna_zee ,
unavee and
slightlytookish were there and quite a few others. We just hung out talking about the new episode of Merlin,
smoo_nyc gave us a bit of how it was to interview the cast and then it was time to get into the small theatre to see Parked.
The director was supposed to be there but had to cancel. The movie was not what I'd usually see but it was really brilliantly acted by both Colm Meany and Colin Morgan (the man is a chameleon, I swear). When the movie was over, I had to take a breath or two just to get my head back together. The movie was so darn depressing but omg, Colin was amazing. He will go very far.
And then the day was done.
