Why do we do what we do?

I’m talking about the anime community; going to events, conventions, cosplay ( Read more... )

It's like a small scale experiment, the mentality of those in Hollywood or NYC.

I have heard/seen so many situations where one person screws another to get a role, or just to look better. Hell, I have been screwed. People want to stand out, and in order to get there they take no prisoners...its absolutly bullshit.

Mark my words, i will make my own way, and there won't be anyone standing on the sidelines saying i ruined their rep. or purposly hurt them.

I have been watching all of you clambering over each other to get to a photo shoot of and/or audition for someone who has terribly hurt someone close to you.

Who is this person close to us, that has been hurt? Care to elaborate?

Honestly, I'm referring to several people on both sides of the situation; or I would not make a generalized LJ post.

I can only wonder who it is ;)

As for why *I* do what I do, cosplay and beyond. Its because I can.

Oh yeah and I want to kick pink-kimono-boy's ass.

I do it for fun, though this is more of a general statement. Eventually I grew tired of it and "retired." For as long as I can remember I've been helping run things at cons, and it's nice to just wander around without responsibilities to worry about and just be a fan again. Though this has nothing to do with the post you made, I still thought I'd chime in with my 2 cents ^_^.

Frankly I feel that Metrocon is poorly run and not very much fun at all. But I suppose the head honcho being more interested in a paycheck than putting on a good show like the other anime cons has something to do with that.

Actually, that's the sad thing. From what I hear, he does put on a good show. People seem to enjoy Metro (I've never gone, so I don't know). But like people have been saying, it's all due to the volunteers. You would think the chess match players would recieve more than a 3-day pass, since they are asked to do so much. But, that is also the nature of most cosplayers. They'll do anything they can to be in the spotlight, even if they are getting nothing out of it. Oh wait, they will say "But look! Everyone will see us and know us and love us!"

I find most people still laugh at them. ^_~

Last years Metro was just pathetic, the list of things wrong with it is massive. I didnt see the chessmatch myself, so i have no opinion of whther it was good or bad.The same goes for the costume/cosplay contest(the only problem i had with the costume contest was it was being judged in the main hallway... i found this out AFTER trying to strike up a conversation with a cosplayer as she was being judged. u_u;;) and i was lucky enough to grab a free pass, but if i had paid for it i would have wanted my money back. I did enjoy the metro from 2 years ago a great deal, however so ill will be returning with high hopes this year.

That being said, im sure there were tons of great people on staff, or judging or whatever, im not trying to make any personal blows here. But I amongst many people was FAR from pleased.

I had more fun at metrocon than any other convetions this year dispite the unplesentness that followed.

"someone who has terribly hurt someone close to you."
I can't think of any one he's hurt that I'm close to.. or even friendly with.
I do know some people who dislike him but none that could clame personal hurt.

As far as making a living running his convention. The peole that run Megacon do it for a living, the people who run Dragocon do it for a living. Sure both of those conventions are much larger than Metrocon is now but if it's a matter of saying that a convetion isn't as good because some one profits or makes a living off of the convetion why not atack those conventions as well? Just because you get paid doesn't mean you don't do it for the fans.

It's not that fact that he's running the con for profit. It's the fact that he's using fans "volunteering" for his convention that he makes a profit from without any kind of reimbursement. And I don't count a con pass because that's just common sense for a volunteer.

Take the larger conventions though. Most that use volunteers that make a profit also offer packages such as free hotel rooms, financial reimbursement, or even paid travel to and from the event. Although Megacon is an exception to this, it doesn't make it any less true. Now in metrocon's case, Roy uses volunteers to populate his main attraction events, and in that case it only makes sense that those participating in said events should get a cut of the profits gleaned from the attendees.

Roy makes a profit from the hard work of volunteers without giving them anything in return, and THAT is why people attack him.
