do you use microsoft word? how recent is it? i got mine about 1 1/2 years ago and it has a recording function. so if you have a laptop that works pretty well.

thanks for the tip, i had no idea this was even a possibility! my computer is 7 years old, so i'll take a guess and say its not gonna work. plus it requires a plug to work and its clunky to lug around, so i think shelling out a bit of money for a decent portable recorder is the best choice.

i got an olympus ws-300m and have been really happy with it--it plugs right into your usb port, and then i transcribe off of windows media player. recording quality is very good for the price, even without an external mic (i've recorded interviews in starbucks with horrible music blasting right above and still been able to sort out the interview voices fine). i think they're phasing out that model, so it's not available as cheap as it has been in the past, but the ws-311m looks pretty similar (perhaps this model replaced the ws-300m?). jake has a ws-100 that works fine too.
