Excel, why are you difficult?

All I want are pretty axis on my graphs. Specifically, I want the Y axis, with a logarithmic scale, to have the values written 10(superscript)3 not 1.0E+3. Why is this not possible? The suggestions I've found online are "Fake it with a Text Box" and "Use Prism (or something else)". This is annoying, and I don't think it needs to be so difficult
